CENSUS: BAY AREA IS GROWING FAR LESS THAN THE REST OF THE STATE
By Steven Tavares
The East Bay along with the entire San Francisco Bay Area is seeing an unprecedented change in its ethnic demographic, according to U.S. Census figures released Tuesday.
Asians and Latinos found significant gains in several East Bay cities, yet the overall flow of the population is skewing radically away from the region in droves for the Central Valley.
While the state grew by 10 percent in the last decade, the Bay Area lagged far behind. Alameda County’s 4.6 percent population increase is alarmingly low next to its neighbors in Contra Costa and San Joaquin Counties. While Contra Costa grew by 10.6 percent, hyper growth in San Joaquin is a whopping 21.6 percent. Riverside County in Southern California followed a similar shift in demographics as the East Bay and led all counties in expansion by adding over 350,000 residents, representing a 41.7 percent increase.
The large discrepancy between counties ensures East Bay congressional districts representing a portion of San Joaquin voters will now receive an even larger portion of the more conservative constituency. Reps. Jerry McNerney and Pete Stark, already representing a portion of Tri-Valley, will likely have their districts further transformed. Reps. Barbara Lee and John Garamendi will likely face similar situations in the north.
San Leandro, which grew a healthy, by East Bay standards–seven percent–still fell well behind the state average. It added over 4,500, increasing its population to 84,950. The East Bay city followed similar changes in its racial composition to nearby San Lorenzo and Hayward. With the latest census, San Leandro now possess three nearly equal racial minorities. Already one of the most diverse cities in the Bay Area, San Leandro demographic is now topped by Asians (29.3%), Latinos (27.4%), whites (27.1%) and blacks (11.8%).
Hayward showed similar increases with Latinos making up over 40 percent of the population, followed by Asians (21.6%), whites (18.8%), black (11.3%). Hayward’s population rose by almost three percent to 144,186. San Lorenzo also contains more Latinos than any racial demographic at 37.7 percent of its 23,452 residents. It is followed by 32.4% white, 21.1% Asian and just 4.5% black.
Two East Bay cities gained Asian majorities for the first time. Union City at 50.4 percent of its population edged Fremont at 50.3 percent for the largest percentage in Alameda County. The trend follows similar increases in neighboring large cities in Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose.

Crime is lower everywhere in the area, crime is still higher here than the tri valley, San Jose and nmany otehr cities. If you want to look at the real benefit of the changes in San Leandro population/demographics, look at our once very desireable High School, it is now pathetic and no middle class family wants to send their kids there and it is causing our property values in the nicer neighborhoods to fall further and faster than suburbs to our east. Oh really? It was boring in the '70s? Bayfair and Downtown were thriving. Sure you had to watch yourself to avoid getting mugged on E. 14th, Bancroft and MacArthur north of Dutton Ave. Funny how “Proud San Leandran” claims that San Leandro was “segregated” in the 1970's, but doesn't mention the blacks who robbed white people in San Leandro then just crossed over into Oakland. It's always the victims fault with jackasses like him. He never mentions that prior to the 1960's there was little difference between East Oakland and San Leandro and you could cross Durant and not even know you were in Oakland. Castlemont High in the 1950's only had a handful of blacks. Yet that all changed in the 1960's when Blacks moved into East Oakland. But it's all San Leandro's fault that East Oakland became a slum, not the people who made it a slum. But the, “Proud San Leandran” never lived here until recently so it's to be expected.

Black males are way over represented in commiting crimes in our society as a % of their population, I do not think anyone can argue with that.

Then there are the black African-Americans with no job, no education and no restraint – taxpayer-supported in Section 8 housing selling weed to supplement their incomes so they can afford “they bling-bling” and hundred dollah sneakers. They are literally breeding more future welfare recipients.
I agree with you about trade laws – wasn't it the left's poster child for no restraint, Mr. William Jefferson Clinton who implemented that?

There's some decline these days, just not the types you claim, or for the causes you claim.
AGAIN, diversity is currently higher than it's ever been in San Leandro, and crime has gone down sharply in recent years, including violent crime. You and others refuse to tell us how that would be possible based on your other claims.
You present no evidence at all that “Most of the crimes are committed by Black males and Hispanic males are 2nd”. Where are your statistics proving this? I don't believe you have any.
“The ghetto is next door after all and now its citizens are moving here…”? Wow. Okay…
Lower economic classes are currently being created everywhere in this State (and nation) by race-to-the-bottom trade deals, labor laws which fail to protect decent wages, benefits and workers' rights, failure to invest in our education system, and other causes. For example, in recent years California has been last or near last in the nation in the ratio of teachers to students.
Lower class is not lower character. These days, more money is stolen by the rich than the poor. By a long shot.

In 2007 Part 1 Serious crimes totaled 4848, 2008=4830, 2009=4237, 2010=3890. So, San Leandro is safer now than it was in 1980 when it didn't have the diversity it does now. It is painfully noticeable that you somehow avoided the discussion of San Leandro's Black population in our 1970 Census.
The FHA was passed in 1968. There was no housing discrimination, such as covenants, which affected the population balance of San Leandro in 1970? Prove your assertion.
I believe that there are many ways that the Wikipedia entry can be proven true. For example:
“On May 6, 1967, San Leandro Mayor Jack Maltester testified at a hearing of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, which was investigating housing discrimination.
The (beginning) of Maltester's testimony follows.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. The next witness is the Hon. John D. Maltester. Whereupon, the Hon. John D. Maltester was sworn by the Chairman and testified as follows:
TESTIMONY OF THE HON. JOHN D. MALTESTER, MAYOR OF SAN LEANDRO, CALIFORNIA
MR. GLICKSTEIN. Would you please state your full name and address for the record.
MAYOR MALTESTER. It's Jack D. Maltester, 715 Woodland Avenue, San Leandro.

MAYOR MALTESTER. Half owner in a printing business and mayor of the city of San Leandro.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. How long have you been mayor?
MAYOR MALTESTER. Since 1958.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. Are you also a member of the city council?
MAYOR MALTESTER. Yes.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. What is the population of San Leandro?
MAYOR MALTESTER. The last official population was 69,000, close to 70,000, and anticipated at this time probably closer to 75,000.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. You think it's about 75,000?
MAYOR MALTESTER. Yes.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. How many Negroes live in San Leandro?
MAYOR MALTESTER. I cannot tell you to the exact amount. I get two different reports. I would guess it's between 20 and 25, 26.
MR. GLICKSTEIN. Twenty or 25 persons or families?
MAYOR MALTESTER. Persons.

And that section of Broadmoor where Beverly and Warwick run straight into Oakland has always served as a quick getaway for burglars. It's so sad that the Left has to make up excuses for their failures and always blaming the victims for the crimes of criminals. In the 1970's Bayfair Mall and downtown were thriving and very safe to walk and shop. Not no more. But according to the baboosh above these areas are like fields of daisies. bahahhahahhaha

Proud–don't try and confuse Manny aka Paul Vargas by stating facts–he just wants to believe that over 5000 Type 1 serious crimes in 1980 is less than under 4000 Type 1 serious crimes in 2010. We're comparing apples to apples, but he wants to live with his ultra-conservative perceptions. I live in San Leandro too, and crime is way down since the 70's when I moved here.

Why has crime in our City gone down as diversity has gone up?

A 14% dropout rate in San Leandro Schools, mostly black and Mexican kids. San Lorenzo Schools, with the same types of kids, has a lower dropout rate. Corvallis School has the same test scores as the “gem” of Roosevelt and Corvallis has more of the “uneducated” Chinese parents that the liberals have disparged in this blog. Those who can't argue with facts have to resort to the only word they know; “racism”. Sorry Charlie, no cigar for you.

These white liberals don't get it until “diversity” literally smacks them upside their heads. And then some of them still don't get it.
And yes, most smart people who can afford to do so are leaving. Diversity has sure helped San Leandro schools be a lot better and safer than they were 20 years ago- that's why people are flocking to San Leandro in droves for the schools, right?

The most violent crimes were down. Looking at the Police Department's statistics, we can see that this continues a long trend over the last five years of crime going down every year in our City.
I'm sorry that the presence of people with skin differently coloresd from yours causes you to piss your pants. While you change your underwear and rant “the coloreds did it”, life moves on around you.

Hey moron, the crime in this town has shot up with more “diversity”. Don't try to lump broken windows in with armed robbery, rape and car thefts. As San Leandro has become more racially diverse in recent years, crime has gone down. It angers me that our angry/petrified commenters refuse to acknowledge this fact. I wonder what's in it for them to be so blinded by their prejudice.
Clothes sold at Bayfair Mall have nothing to do with the purchaser's ability to follow the law. What a deeply silly statement.
Every generation selects clothing and music that the previous generation doesn't understand. I am certain that many of the people hating on San Leandro in this thread did the same themselves when they were growing into their teens and yound adulthood. Those who didn't were very strange indeed. Who wears the same style of clothing as their parents when they're 18?
Were the greater numbers of violent crimes in the 90's, 80's and 70's less threatening to our anonymous commenters because they were committed by non-“ghetto” types?
Some of the San Leandrans Brian Copeland ran into during his childhood are on this comments thread.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.
With the urban ghettonization of San Leandro now complete, the thug element now dominates the culture.
Maybe San Leandro's crime hasn't gone up according to city statistics; but in 2008-2010 you had a surge of violent takeover robberies; a video store half a mile from the police station robbed at gunpoint 5 times; the owner of the Englander being shot in the face; Wells Fargo ATM carjackings–and more recently 2 fast food establishments being robbed at gunpoint, home invasion robberies where the residents were tied-up, and “gangsta” shootouts at hip-hop dances.
According to Yelp, Bayfair Mall (which sells urban gangsta clothes and caters to the thugs) is the most ghetto mall in the East Bay.
Has San Leandro's black and Hispanic “diversity” contributed to this? Well, just look at crime statistics for the less “diverse” Tri-Valley. About 1/20th less.
You be the judge.

Frank, it's quite possible for crime in San Leandro to be at its lowest in 30 years and at the same time have crime rates higher than other cities. See, the fact is that San Leandro has LOWER crime than before, and crime has trended down for many years here.
Claims that the increased minority population in town has raised crime are absolutely false. Look at the stats above. We had our highest crime rate fifteen years ago and more, when we had a higher percentage of whites in town. Misguided, desperate people come in all colors.
Barry, I'm sorry about what's happening in your neighborhood and hope it improves quickly. Burglaries are absolutely upsetting, but it doesn't reflect the city as a whole.

“Overall, the number of crimes in San Leandro reported to the police department last year was the lowest in the past 30 years, according to department statistics….Crime was down in San Leandro by 8 percent last year compared to the previous year. Some government employees pay into Social Security and therefore get to collect it. Some don't–Quite a few years ago they were given a choice of whether to stay in the system or opt out. Many chose to stay in because they felt it was the right thing to do. If it was up to me everyone would have to pay into the system, public or private employee, and there would be no upper cap for millionaires, above which you don't have to pay. This would keep the system fully solvent for our lifetime, and our children's (+ their children's), too.

Live here because it was a good commute to the City via BART, a nice house and nice weather with a view in Bay O Vista and I thought it had some potential. Seems like might be time to move on, SL feels like it is on a continual decline from my observations and really has little to offer – its not urban creative class living with interesting people and places to go and it is not a nice middle class, safe and clean suburb with good schools and the problem, free life that a nice suburb should have. Kind of a nowhere place with no identity. Its sad and really to bad, Emeryville turned it around, but San Leandro missed the boat and now I fear it is too late, SL is too far into the decline cycle to attract the millenials or creativce energy it needs to rebound and reinvent.

Do people STILL believe in the Census? As I reported on here during the 2010 Census, I witnessed and videoed three takers “making up” numbers at a McDonalds. When they came to my house in Hayward, I told them that “there area 2 people living here, no, four…actually, five. Me and the rest were hispanic.” Yes, I lied.
When I moved from LA back here, I took the Census taker test; figured extra money. I scored a 100. The next best score…79. My point…who were the census takers? I am no genius but I was in a room full of…lets just say, people really needing money…I could not video the Supervisor who said…”if you have to, guess.” It was that comment that made me say “no thanks.” That and I got a full-time job. White people don't care about San Leandro. They don't care to live there. Most are trapped and hoping for a way out.
“Diversity” has had a negative impact on crime and public schools. The Asians here are the poorer, uneducated immigrants. Once they start getting education and better jobs, they'll head out to the peninsula, Tri-Valley or out of state. Usually only takes a generation (or less) for the Asians to improve their social standing. We can learn a lot from them.
San Leandro used to be the white suburb that professional educated blacks aspired to live in. Now it's become the ghetto to which professional, educated blacks aspire to get out of – except maybe Brian Copeland though he does put his kids in private schooling.
