ASSEMBLY | 16TH DISTRICT | In the last month, Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti’s campaign for the 16th Assembly District has attracted independent expenditures of over $485,000, as of Tuesday. One of his challenger, Orinda Councilmember Steve Glazer, well-known for his strong stance against the BART strike last year, criticized the massive infusion of campaign funds last week.
Undaunted, Sbranti, received two additional independent expenditures on Tuesday totaling another $100,000. Both Glazer and Sbranti are Democrats
The latest contributions came from the Professional Engineers in California Government PAC and the State Buildings and Construction Trades Council of California PAC. Seven of the eight donations were collected since Mar. 17, the end of the first quarter finance report period. Furthermore, Sbranti has received $200,000 combined from labor PACs in just the last seven days.
Labor’s interest in opposing Glazer is not a surprise after he forcefully called for a ban on BART strikes following the roller coaster negotiations between the union last fall and transit management. Despite an agreement ending resident’s daily transportation uncertainty, Glazer has continued to use residual angst over the BART strikes to his advantage.
The open 16th Assembly District seat includes Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton in Alameda County and San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek and the Lamorinda area of Contra Costa County.
Democratic Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich and Republican Catharine Baker are also candidates in the June 3 primary, but it is Sbranti who has been able to attract labor’s time and money. In addition, Sbranti reported a campaign balance of just over $100,000 last month.
Glazer is hardly short on cash, himself, according to campaign finance reports. He reported an ending balance of over $429,000, more than enough to match Sbranti’s independent expenditure deposits.

I see the the shill is trying to directly link oil and tobacco companies to Glazer, rather than being paid as a consultant by JobsPAC. If you only would have gone 1-2 degrees further – you could say Glazer tax dollars are paying public unions – which are funding Sbranti's war chest. So you see, oil & tobacco are funding Sbranti's campaign!
Of course, I don't see any effort to dig into Sbranti's political donation history before he became the unions' darling. If the shill did, he might have mentioned Sbranti's donations from PG&E and 3 donations from Chevron.

I agree with most of the 11:53 post, live in Contra Costa and will walk and phone for Tim Sbranti. Yes I'm a supporter of teachers & nurses and believe that is a plus not a minus, as do many of my friends. Teachers and nurses are generally selfless individuals trying to help others and more should be in Sacramento. Most people aren't as far to the right as you are.

We believe that teachers belong in the classroom. To that end, we will be voting for clean STEVE GLAZER 2014. The future assemblyman knows that, too. We all need to send Steve to Sacramento and his opponent back to the classroom, where he belongs.
Teachers have no business in the capital; that's the place for qualified legislators. Teachers belong in the classroom, implementing the policy that the qualified legislators have passed.

I can't support novices who have no idea what they are doing and are in over their head either. That's why I won't be voting for Glazer who has done nothing for the less fortunate, lies to the voters, takes over a million dollars from corporate interests in independent expenditures and only cares about one issue. He has nothing to offer!
I'll be voting for the experienced and thoughtful Tim Sbranti who has accomplished many things as a teacher and Mayor of Dublin that have helped the middle and lower class. There are so many things more important than the antiunion sexist troll's hatred of unions. Public safety is one of them and that's why Tim is supported by Police and Fire, Nurses and Environmental groups.

My family and I just voted for Steve Glazer since he isn't a puppet of the entrenched special interests. He's definitely not controlled by big business. After all of the accusations and counter-accusations, we did our homework. He is the best hope of having an independent-minded Democrat in Sacramento and who has an excellent repoire with Jerry Brown. The man knows how to say 'NO' to the unions, which want to bankrupt California and have done a pretty good job so far!

If you look at Tim Sbranti's website you will see the large number of diverse groups that are endorsing Tim. They are not just unions, but consumers, seniors, environmentalists, youth, women, conservatives, moderates, and independents.
Your candidate by contrast, has gotten most of his money from corporate interest groups who want to stick it to the middle and lower classes. Looks like Tim is the people's choice in 2014, although your candidate sure has sexist support as proved by your posts.

Here's what will happen in the 2014 elections according to political predictions in our District.
Arnerich and Glazer will split the anti-union vote along with the Republican. Tim Sbranti will get plurality of votes because there are many more progressives in the District now and with Joan Buchanan and other popular electeds helping him along with a multitude of volunteers, he's a cinch to be in the runoff with the Republican woman.
Glazer and Arnerich will endorse Tim Sbranti in the General and it will be a lopsided victory for Tim since the district is now firmly in Democratic hands and Tim will have the most volunteers.
Tim Sbranti will be the people's choice in June and November.

The Livermore Independent recommends Tim Sbranti for District 16 in the State Assembly. His background in education and civic service would provide an experienced local voice at the state level.

Newell Arnerich, Catharine Baker, Steve Glazer, and Tim Sbranti are on the ballot. The top two will be on the November 2014 ballot, regardless of party affiliation.
As the Mayor of Dublin, Sbranti has been pro business and pro labor. His pro environment stands will add to the quality of life for Dublin and the Tri-Valley. During his time in office, policies have brought businesses and jobs to Dublin. The city’s climate action plan, and his support of the current Open Space Initiative are examples of Sbranti being able to work for the betterment of all.
Sbranti stated that the business climate in the state could be improved through investment in infrastructure, such as BART to Livermore. He would not change environmental laws, rather he would put the focus on making bureaucracy more efficient. He points out that environmental laws have created jobs and enhanced the quality of life for people in the state.
He is opposed to the two tunnel system proposed by Governor Brown to carry water around the Delta, calling it bad for the environment, costly and providing no solution to the water problems.
As a teacher, Sbranti has gained understanding of the issues schools face and the importance of education to improving the economy.
His strong support of education has led the incumbent, Joan Buchanan, to endorse him.
Sbranti's experience in public service, both as mayor and a public educator, puts him in a solid position to take on the challenges facing schools, the environment, employment and business.

Steve Glazer obviously upset Sacramento's status quo. Organized labor groups already have spent nearly $1 million to deny the Orinda councilman election to the state Assembly seat that reaches from east of the Berkeley hills to the Tri-Valley. Their smear campaign against him has been as disingenuous as it is disgusting.
To a fair-minded voter, the unions' vehemence might seem oddly out of scale in view of the relatively minor policy differences between Glazer and labor's favorite in the race, Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti, a longtime teacher and coach who once oversaw the California Teachers Association's political action committee.
There's no doubt that Sbranti would fit in just fine with the Democratic majority at the State Capitol. He's engaging, studied and resolutely party line.
Glazer is more the maverick who is willing to declare his independence when he sees the party veering from the public interest. One high-profile example was his campaign to prohibit BART strikes on the argument that mass transit is an essential public service and a matter of health and safety.
Another is his stated willingness to reform the California Environmental Quality Act to curb abuses that have nothing to do with protecting natural resources, such as labor unions using its legal tools to extract concessions or businesses trying to stymie competition.
Glazer also has refused to answer any questionnaires from groups that do not make their answers public. One of the dirty secrets of California politics is that special interests use these questionnaires to extract private pledges from candidates as a condition of endorsements and campaign contributions.
While Glazer won't play that game, Sbranti declined our request to see the questionnaires he has filled out.
Labor has made Glazer's defeat one of its 2014 priorities. It has flooded the district with volunteers and a social media campaign that has attempted to use his work as a consultant to a state Chamber of Commerce political action committee to link him, however flimsily, to Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Tobacco and other poll-tested villains.
It doesn't wash.
In truth, Sbranti has received direct contributions from some of the very sources (Chevron, PG&E, home builders) that are being used against Glazer, who has served as an adviser to Gov. Jerry Brown at various points over more than three decades. The records of both Democrats make plain that neither is going to be a pawn of big business.
Catharine Baker, a Republican attorney, appears to have a solid chance of making the November runoff against one of the Democrats. She is clearly more deferential to business and further to the right than Glazer or Sbranti on guns, education reforms and social issues.
The third Democrat in the race, Danville Councilman Newell Arnerich, has been largely overshadowed in the proxy war over Glazer and Sbranti. Arnerich has an appealing grassroots pitch, but he lacks his fellow Democrats' experience in statewide politics.
Sacramento needs more strong, independent voices to challenge the dogma of the status quo. Glazer is our choice in the June 3 primary.

The Tim Sbranti for Assembly campaign gained another valuable endorsement today from Sierra Club California. The 150,000 member environmental organization noted Sbranti’s strong environmental record in their backing of the Dublin Mayor and teacher.

He is one who works towards compromise and has the support of moderates, independents, democrats, consumers, police, fire, nurses, teachers, environmentalists, seniors, women, and others who care about multiple issues that matter to voters and not just one issue like your candidate.

I am so proud to announce that today I received the very important endorsement of the Livermore Independent newspaper. They know that I am the only candidate in this race with the background and knowledge to represent us in Sacramento. They point out my strong environmental stance, as well as my ability to work with business to bring jobs to our area. Here's what will happen in the 2014 elections according to political predictions in our District.
Arnerich and Glazer will split the anti-union vote along with the Republican. Tim Sbranti will get plurality of votes because there are many more progressives in the District now and with Joan Buchanan and other popular electeds helping him along with a multitude of volunteers, he's a cinch to be in the runoff with the Republican woman.
Glazer and Arnerich will endorse Tim Sbranti in the General and it will be a lopsided victory for Tim since the district is now firmly in Democratic hands and Tim will have the most volunteers.
Tim Sbranti will be the people's choice in June and November.

I want to wish everyone a meaningful Earth Day. In the Bay Area, we sometimes take our beautiful environment for granted. This is risky, because environmental stewardship requires ongoing vigilance. Our clean air and water, bays, forests, grasslands and creeks won't stay protected unless they are a part of every discussion.
Earth Day Fact: Every day that the BART trains don't run, 16 million pounds of carbon is spewed into the air due to increased vehicle emissions. The environment can't afford another strike!

Guy Houston was from Dublin when he was elected. It really doesn't matter which County you are from, only how many volunteers you can get to help. The Democratic Party alone can turn out hundreds.

The political scenario from analysts has the Republican, and only woman, Baker and Tim Sbranti in the run off. Tim has the Democratic Party with their hundreds of volunteers along with the teacher money. Tim wins the November election in a not so close race, with the other Dems. supporting him.

Assuming he and Glazer are the top two, I don't think that 1000% union candidate will fare all that well.
And looking at Sbranti's former position as Chair of the Political Involvement Committee of the California Teachers Association you have to wonder if he'd EVER vote for anything the teachers didn't want.
Anything to do with education reform would be out of the question if it endangered any of the multitude of protections the CTA gives to teachers whether they are good or terrible.
Not that many in the public liked the sweet heart deal that the BART board gave to the union when they rolled over at the end. The public was not pleased.
One of the more interesting battles this spring and fall.
I'd say Glazer wins it by 3% in November as the unions overplay their hand.

Anyone who is this far down in the pocket of special interests is disgusting. And anyone who brands themselves as “anti-union”–choosing not just to occasionally disagree with, but to actively vilify and work against working people fighting for good wages and benefits–is even worse.
