Sara Lamnin |
HAYWARD | CITY COUNCIL | Community leader Sara Lamnin is now the top vote-getter in Hayward’s City Council election after an update by the Alameda County registrar. Two spots on the council were available to the top two finishers. Lamnin, though, had trailed Councilmember Marvin Peixoto for the top spot since the June 3 election.
Both candidates will be sworn-in in coming weeks, but Lamnin’s victory could be symbolic after being one of two labor-endorsed candidates who protested the current City Council’s rigid stance earlier this year toward city employees.
Lamnin’s lead is 116 votes and likely to stand since the Alameda County Registrar of Voters said Wednesday it has counted all its ballots. Incidentally, Lamnin’s 4,895 votes is just 2 fewer than the winner of Hayward’s mayoral race, Councilmember Barbara Halliday.
The new City Council will also be short one member after Councilmember Mark Salinas lost his bid for mayor while not seeking re-election to this council seat. Among the potential candidates for appointment to Halliday’s last two years of her council term is Rocky Fernandez and Julie McKillop, both candidates from this June 3; Hayward Planning Commissioner Elisa Marquez; in addition, to Salinas.

Hey, gang, just got an update from Ellen, who asked me to share with all:
For those asking about my future plans, I have decided to accept an offer from Platinum Advisors in Sacramento. I'll be whoring for the unions; this is a natural fit for me since it's what I would have done had a miracle happened and I actually won the election. That was NEVER going to happen. I'm also going to accept Congressman Swalwell's generous offer to do an internship in his district office. This is about as close to congress as I will ever get. From what I understand one of my responsibilities will be baking cookies. The staffers work so very hard and deserve home-baked treats. Anyone know of any good cookbooks? I really need to bone up. That's the latest for now. I'll keep you updated from time to time via Wendi Bain.

Came up short with mayor and second council spot. No cigar.

The only brain dead one is the antiunion poster at 8:52. Since you came in 6th with less than 5% of the vote Mr. Farias, in your 3rd try, you should know Hayward hates you by now.
Salinas was the one attacking the unions the most, up until the very end. He was targeted for defeat because Barbara reached out to them and tried to make nice. I know many union members in Hayward who voted for her as the better of the two. Maybe if you talked to more voters you might learn something.

Piexoto was also supported by unions. Union supported candidates came in one, two and three. They sent the message they wanted. In the Mayors race there was no choice, except they definitely didn't want Salinas. Most of the ones I talked to, voted for Halliday, as they felt she was the most progressive and sympathetic to their plight.
In the rest of the county and state Labor and the Democratic party kicked ass and were successful in almost all their efforts. I'm sure they are very happy with a 95+% success rate. Once again anti-union and tea baggers go down in flames. Thank you Hayward, Bay Area and State of California voters. The November election will find the same high success rate and the above poster knows it.

I'd like to see City Council's performance evals, if there was such a thing. Maybe if people watched some of the council meetings, they would change their minda & move Hayward forward.Fran David gambled and lost taxpayers money when she figured the State wouldn't snatch Redevlopment funding. She's moved money from one fund to another in her own COH shell game. She's hidden her raises and caused enough problems for Hayward. She has to go!

Taxpayers should be sick of smarmy, ineffectual politicians who get lifetime medical benefits for warming the seats on the Council dais. Some legacy! Aren't they considered city employees? They give themselves raises and we as taxpayers pay for their pension, health benefits, etc. Do they get performance evaluations? Can they get fired from their job? Nope. They can't be imposed on, but they can be impeached. How many part time jobs offer great perks, like lifetime medical benefits, all expense paid travel for “business purposes” and use of city staff/equipment to plug your business (Realty World). Ok Hayward, time to see how things really are.

If Hayward is such a “strong & better place” how can you explain the logic behind “The Loop” and the constant glooom & doom scenario that Mayor Sweeney & the Council constantly harp on? They say “Hayward is the next Stockton.” Yeah, after they get through spending what Hayward doesn't have to spend on fancy new buildings. How about the thousands of dollars that were bank rolled to pass Measure C. Saintly Fran David contributed $2, 500.00 of her overpaid salary to hawk Measure C. Heyhayward.com has a breakdown of PAC contributions for Measure C. The Daily Review won't write an article about that. I thought Greg Jones was the worst City Manager ever, but Fran David wins that distinction. Don't be surprised if she finagles herself a raise with that Measure C money.

The only “healing” Hayward needs to do is from the decades of overspending on unsustainable employee pension and health benefits that threatens to bankrupt our city. Taxpayers are sick and tired of public employees griping about unappreciated they supposedly are, while swiping from our pocketbooks and constantly demanding more more more. You have a secure job, you are paid extremely well for the work you do, and you enjoy benefits that are far better than the vast majority of other workers. Enough is enough. Show some respect for the people paying your wages.

Fran David is a good city manager. Her list of achievements for Hayward is long and lasting. The same is true for Mayor Sweeney. Together they have made Hayward a better, stronger city. All of the current City Council members are good leaders doing a difficult and often thankless job. Let's hope Mayor-Elect Barbara Halliday and the rest of the current City Council keep moving forward. Let's hope they don't listen to people who want to drag Hayward down and erase the progress that has been made. Let's hope they continue to stand for the people of Hayward who pay the bills.

Pretty much all of the candidates for Mayor and City Council solicited union endorsements. Maybe not so much Salinas, since he's a cry baby and he's upset because he lost his “medical coverage” as a teacher/instructor and he blames his union for it. Good thing he has that council perk of lifetime medical benefits to fall back on–oh and a free trip to China so he can scare up business for Hayward, what a joke. Bottom line, Hayward voters have spoken–Sara was their number one choice. Sadly, Barbara Halliday was the number one choice of Hayward voters for Mayor, but maybe she will come to her senses and also move Hayward forward , instead of being a mini-Mayor Mike. I don't expect much from Barbara, but neither do the citizens who voted her into office. Time to fire Fran David for her lack of city management skills. She's done enough damage to the City and its work force. Save the City money and boot her out the door. She's an over paid buffoon.

It’s important to note that in contests where the Dem. State Party’s delegates endorsed a candidate, those candidates performed exceedingly well. In fact, 96% of candidates endorsed by the California Democratic Party moved past the primary election and will be on the ballot in November – that’s an extraordinary success rate.
Our candidates' success speaks to the importance of the Democratic Party’s endorsement in the era of the “Top Two” Primary.
Below is a tally on the performance of endorsed candidates in the 2014 primary election:
Statewide candidates
