CONGRESS | 15TH DISTRICT | Rep. Eric Swalwell meet Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Multiple media reports described it as “sparring” last week between the freshman Democrat and the folksy Texan who received the question while sitting side saddle. But, it was hardly that.
In fact, Swalwell’s questioning of Perry over the immigration and detention of young people attempting to cross the border from Central America fizzled to the point where the subject began quizzing the questioner into making comments that could be construed by the Fox News crowd as liberal flip-flopping.
“Do you not agree that they need to be sent back to where they’re from?” Perry began questioning Swalwell.
“I do agree on a case-by-case basis, we do not want them to come here,” Swalwell answered. But, possibly sensing a chance to corner Swalwell, Perry pressed on.
“But you agree—I want you on the record here in front of God and everybody—you agree that they need to be sent back to the country where they came from?” said Perry.

The poll, conducted on July 31-Aug. 5, found that 51 percent of Americans believe the unaccompanied children being detained at the U.S.-Mexico border should be allowed to remain in the country for some length of time.
That included 38 percent who thought the unaccompanied youngsters should be sheltered and cared for until it was deemed safe for them to return home. Thirteen percent said the children should be allowed to stay in the United States, while 32 percent said the children should be immediately deported.
“Overall, people are humane and they understand that no matter what our situation is with the budget, whether or not we can afford this, these are kids. No matter what the immigration system is, they are innocent,” said Lance Lee, 42, of Alabama, who took part in the survey.

It is likely that this vote will be a watershed moment similar to former GOP California Governor Pete Wilson's support of Prop 187 in the 1990's that turned formerly purple California into a bright blue state. They have refused to provide the necessary resources to deal with what they call a serious problem because the Tea Party Republicans are acting like children and need to grow up. In the meantime the laws of our country say the refugees must have their day in court to determine if these children can be sent back safely. The law was supposed to ensure that children fleeing persecution or trafficking or other severe abuse were not returned to grave danger. That's not the problem. The problem is too few immigration judges to handle the backlog of cases, including the latest flood of children. Blame that on the Republicans.

The poll, conducted on July 31-Aug. 5, found that 51 percent of Americans believe the unaccompanied children being detained at the U.S.-Mexico border should be allowed to remain in the country for some length of time.
That included 38 percent who thought the unaccompanied youngsters should be sheltered and cared for until it was deemed safe for them to return home. Thirteen percent said the children should be allowed to stay in the United States, while 32 percent said the children should be immediately deported.

The WSJ editorial board wrote, however, that the adding on of the DACA legislation to the package only provided ” another spectacle of internal disarray” on what should be a path to a Senate majority in November.

And then there is the way the GOP moved last week to marginalize themselves with Hispanic voters. Today Hispanics represent 16% of ordinary Americans. By 2050 they will represent 30%. No matter. Not only did the House GOP leadership refuse to bring a popular immigration reform measure to a vote that was passed by a large bi-partisan majority in the Senate. But last Friday, the Republicans also passed a bill to eliminate the Dreamer program that was established by the President to defer the deportation of children brought to America as minors who have known no other country except the USA.
Most Hispanic Americans do not think of these questions as “policy debates.” They take them very personally. They believe that Republicans are not on their side, and that they don't respect their community. And when Hispanic Americans see the vitriol directed by the right wing extremists at buses containing Central American children, they know for a fact that the GOP is opposing immigration reform because much of their base simply does not like Hispanics.
If anyone had remained unconvinced that was true, the vote on the Dreamer program sealed the deal. To find something to address the children border crisis that would pass with the support of their caucus, the GOP leadership had to keep making their bill meaner and meaner until they satisfied their most extremist members.
It is likely that this vote will be a watershed moment similar to former GOP California Governor Pete Wilson's support of Prop 187 in the 1990's that turned formerly purple California into a bright blue state. Between 1960 and 1988 California voted for the Republican Presidential nominee in six of seven elections. It has voted Democratic in every Presidential election since 1992.

Most prominent is our government's failure to defend Democracy in Honduras when the nations president was ousted in a military coup. Since then, the social reforms that had been implemented have been rolled back. Today Honduras has the dubious distinction of vastly leading the region in the huge number of children fleeing their homeland due to terror.
In sharp contrast Nicaragua, an equally poor country that receives far less U.S. aid because of our government's hostility toward the Sandinistas, sends very few children across the border. Why? since coming back into power, the Sandinistas have enacted strong programs to allow the poor to become self sufficient.

CAFTA provoked this current crisis. The US-Central American Free Trade Agreement restructured trade relations and gave unfettered power to US corporations. This has resulted in the destruction of Central American economies, particularly agriculture. Family farmers' ability to make a living was destroyed by cheap, subsidized US agri-business exports to the region that rake in about 20 billion annually.
We need to restructure CAFTA to allow Central American governments to protect local business and stimulate local agricultural production even if US corporate profits suffer. Until these nations are able to provide gainful employment for their citizens, people will be displaced from their homelands, disintegrating families and perpetuating the perfect climate for drug trafficking, gangs and violence to flourish.

If we didn't have the Pacific and Atlantic oceans protecting us, we would have all the 'refugees' from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Jam-packing the U.S. is not the answer.

This is what we lost when we lost Pete Stark.
We lost a progressive voice who would stand up for those kids, who would label them as refugees–which they are–and fight for them to have safe haven in our country, not force them to go back to the violence and oppression they desperately fled.
Instead, we have someone who uses these kids as a political gimmick. Who wants to turn away helpless children fleeing violence. Who says “we do not want them to come here.”
We need people who deal with these issues with compassion & mercy. That is the difference between a good progressive and a corporate Dem.
