FALL ELECTION PREVIEW | The November General Election will not go down as one of the most exciting political seasons in history. The statewide ballot is devoid of a contested race. And it’s pretty much the same on the federal level. However, if all politics is indeed local, the top dozen races for East Bay voters might be able to attract your attention as the campaigns head down the final two months to November. Here are the 12 East Bay races to watch:
Forget the total number of Oakland mayoral
candidates. Seven are legit.
|
1 Oakland Mayor The region’s clear headliner will literally be a 15 round prize fight. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan is facing 14 challengers in this ranked choice voting race that amounts to keeping the city on its current course–which some label a renaissance–or a slight shift in course. However, nevermind there being 15 candidates in this race, the real stat is there is 7 legitimate and capable campaigns hoping to cobble together enough first, second and third place votes to replicate Quan’s surprising win four years ago. This race has quality and it also has a fair share of characters, too.
2 Assembly District 16 This was the primary race that defied logic by the amount of special interest money that was poured into the campaigns of Democrats Steve Glazer and Tim Sbranti. Sbranti advanced to the general, but Glazer did not. Instead, the Republican Catharine Baker registered a seven-point win over Sbranti in this very moderate and winnable district for the conservative. Expect labor to pull out all the stops for Sbranti because he’ll need it. Baker is a tough opponent and Sbranti often appeared out of his element during forums in the spring. Expect this race to also rehash the BART strike of late 2013.
3 BART Board of Directors District 4 Ditto here. Incumbent Robert Raburn angered many in labor for being complicit with management during the long-fought BART strike last year. Labor will likely seek to set Raburn straight in November. Termed out Alameda Councilmember Lena Tam has strong union ties and could unseat Raburn in this very labor-friendly district that includes Oakland and the Island.
4 Congressional District 17 A year ago, this race was positioned as not only the most important race in the East Bay, but one of the biggest in the entire country. Surprisingly, Ro Khanna’s dismal primary performance was the biggest dud since Facebook’s IPO. Furthermore, there doesn’t seem to be a plausible route for Khanna to upset the popular Rep. Mike Honda in November. Nevertheless, the media is still hoping for a storyline to marry with Silicon Valley’s futuristic persona and that involves the youthful Khanna over the veteran representative Honda.
Candidates for Oakland District 2 at a
forum last week.
|
5 Oakland City Council District 2 There is no other race in the area that features the top-to-bottom quality of this one to replace the retiring Councilmember Pat Kernighan in Oakland. In addition, through one reporting period, four of the five candidates are nearly neck-and-neck in fundraising. Abel Guillen is the East Bay newest progressive standard bearer and former local news anchor Dana King has name-recognition.
6 San Leandro Mayor This city is clearly on the rise, but its first-term mayor jumped ship this spring. Curiously, the power vacuum failed to attract any candidates of note. In a three-person ranked choice voting race, two candidates are moribund members of the City Council and the other was released from Santa Rita Jail just days before the deadline for candidates to file in August.
7 Assembly District 15 Like most intra-party jungle primary races, both candidates are virtual facsimiles. Therefore, many of the differences gleaned from the candidates involves personality. Elizabeth Echols is the Berkeley establishment’s candidate to replace the termed out Nancy Skinner, but she’s light on sizzle. Tony Thurmond, meanwhile, is a firecracker of a politician with more than enough charisma for himself and his opponent.
8 Alameda City Council Brace yourself for another edition of Old Alameda versus those handsome firefighters. Two seats on the five-person City Council are open this fall with Councilmember Stewart Chen as the only incumbent. Assemblymember Rob Bonta’s right hand man, Jim Oddie, is the vaunted Alameda Firefighters’ union’s guy for the second spot as it hopes to derail former Councilmember Frank Matarrese’s return to City Hall.
9 Fremont City Council This campaign for two seats on the Fremont City Council features the largest field of candidates outside of the Oakland mayor’s race. Nine candidates, including appointed Councilmember Raj Salwan, are seeking two seats on the five-person council in one of the most diverse and rapidly-changing areas in the Bay Area.
Helen Foster, Karen Monroe, center, at
a forum last February.
|
10 Alameda County Superintendent Alameda County’s top educator is leaving after a generation at the helm. Following Sheila Jordan’s retirement she still hopes to manipulate the machinations at the Office of Education. Jordan’s associate superintendent, Karen Monroe, easily won the June primary, but failed to avoid a November runoff, while San Lorenzo’s Helen Foster scored a surprising second place finish.
11 Oakland City Council District 4 The massive remaking of the Oakland City Council over the past two years will continue with another new member. With Libby Schaaf running for Oakland mayor, Jill Broadhurst and Anne Campbell Washington hope to lead some of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods. A third candidate, Paul Lim, is a long-shot with whole lot of moxie.
12 State Senate District 10 Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski is a near lock to win, but that’s not why you should watch this race. Republican Peter Kuo just may be the key to changing the party’s long-term fortunes in the state. Although he may have inadvertently done it, Kuo has tapped into a sleeping giant of Asian American angst. Not only has Kuo’s advocacy of SCA-5 stoked the growing demographic into potentially realizing they are conservatives, but most importantly, he has cajoled them into pulling out their checkbooks with some regularity.
I live in a conservative area and am absolutely surprised by how many of my friends and neighbors are now going to support Mr Sbranti because of Governor Brown's support. I had already voted for Tim because of our current Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan's endorsement but thought the race would be close. I think he now wins for sure.

Our Democratic household proudly supported Steve Glazer for assembly. After we watched how the unions trashed and vilified him, we had no other choice but to cross party lines and support clean CATHARINE BAKER. If Branti ever got in, he would sell this district down the drain and further bankrupt California.

The only MODERATE in this race:
'SF Chronicle' supports ASSEMBLYWOMAN CATHARINE BAKER 2014 campaign.
After a costly and caustic four-way primary that devolved into “proxy wars” among various well-heeled interests, the November runoff has settled into “a more traditional race” between two major party candidates, suggested Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti, the Democratic candidate.
He’s only half right.
Sbranti, a veteran classroom teacher, is very much a traditional Democrat — especially when it comes to toeing the party line in resistance to education reforms that intrude on the unions’ comfort zone. His engaging style and extensive contacts from a decade in elected office should make him an easy choice for the deep-blue partisans in the district that reaches from east of the Berkeley hills to the Tri-Valley.
But this district, with its affluent suburbs, array of high-performing schools and distinct independent streak, is ripe for a Republican seeking common ground with the 20-plus percent of registered voters who do not claim a party preference.
Republican Catharine Baker, a Pleasanton attorney, fits that bill.
“I have an ability to not be dogmatic and party-line,” she said. As examples, she cited her support of recently passed Democratic legislation on groundwater management, plastic-bag bans and legislation that strengthens the ability to prohibit certain people with mental illnesses from possessing guns. She accepts AB32, the state’s landmark climate-change law, as a settled issue — she would focus on reducing its cost to consumers.
Both candidates express a commitment to improving California’s business climate. Their answers on proposals to curtail abuses of the California Environmental Quality Act — one of the major business complaints about state regulation — are virtually identical: The law is valuable, but needs to be more transparent.
Even Sbranti acknowledged that “at the end of the day,” the differences between the two are not profound on most issues.
However, the distinctions are worth noting. Baker would ban strikes by BART workers; Sbranti would not. Baker has refused to fill out any secret questionnaires by interest groups, which are often a condition of endorsements and contributions; Sbranti has played that game. Baker agrees with a Los Angeles judge’s recent ruling that found that California’s overly protective rules on teacher tenure and the primacy of seniority undermine the civil rights of low-income and minority students; Sbranti sees no need to disrupt the status quo on that point.
Baker’s centrist sensibilities would provide a good influence on the Republican caucus and a potential partner for Democrats looking for bipartisan solutions. She is our choice in the 16th Assembly District.

Baker is a Tea Party extreme Republican appearing at their events who works in Alameda County but lives in Contra Costa. Although Contra Costa has about 25% more voters than Alameda County, she won't be able to make up the huge gap in votes for Tim Sbranti from Alameda County in the much higher voting turn-out in November. Tim will be our next Assemblyman because the Democrats from Brown on down will not let him fail. Baker's extreme positions and Tea Party appearances will be exposed for all the world to see.

***********POLL SHOWS BAKER TAKES LEAD IN 16TH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT!**********
(Pleasanton, CA) – Recently released polling shows a major development in the race for the 16th Assembly District. Democratic pollsters Penn Schoen and Berland surveyed 500 likely voters, on behalf of JobsPAC, showing Republican Catharine Baker starting the race in a dead heat with 42 percent of the vote to union backed Tim Sbranti’s 43 percent. But after testing the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate, she jumps to a commanding lead 53-32% on the informed ballot.
In recent weeks there has been a flurry of Democrat establishment activity and special interest donations to Sbranti from outside of AD-16, including donations from Southern California Democratic legislators and a $100,000 transfer from the Democratic Party. This recent activity demonstrates a concern among party bosses in Sacramento over Sbranti’s chances to win the centrist East Bay Assembly District.
“Baker’s move among Independents was significant and resulted a net shift of 13% toward Baker,” said political analyst Joe Justin.
Justin Matheson, an advisor to Baker’s campaign, said, “Baker’s bipartisan supporters are extremely motivated, as demonstrated by over 120 plus volunteers showing up to canvass this past weekend. She is also receiving key endorsements from local leaders from both parties. We are talking directly to voters, and one thing is clear: voters are not happy about Sbranti’s support for the BART strike, nor his being beholden to Labor Unions on every other issue. They want independent leadership and they are responding to Catharine’s message of common sense and independence.”
To see the complete analysis of the survey, please [Click Here].
Catharine is a mother of school-age twins and an active parent leader in local schools, having served as Vice President of the Dougherty Elementary School Site Council and on several school improvement committees.
Catharine is also a volunteer leader in her community, previously serving on a local preschool board and volunteering with Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts in the region as an archery instructor. She also volunteers on the board of the Diablo Regional Arts Association in Walnut Creek, supporting arts and educational programs for families and schoolchildren throughout her community.

That guy Branti is an ultra-radical, Berkeley leftist, union whore, thug boss. The public already knows this and will be reminded of it by the ASSEMBLYWOMAN CATHARINE BAKER 2014 campaign. Taxpayers simply can't trust him with our taxpayer $$$. If he ever got in, he would bankrupt both Contra Costa and Alameda counties and the State of California. Way too radical for us.
That's why there is a fresh, new choice in CATHARINE BAKER 2014. She is a moderate, who will protect our hard-earned tax-dollars and do right by the district. Please join moderate Republicans, Glazer and Arnerich Democrats and independents who know that Catharine is our ONLY choice this November. A pro-choice, environmentalist, consumer advocate and compassionate voice of reason.
She took first place in the June primary for a simple reason. Hers is a moderate voice which won't be silenced!

Sbranti stated that the business climate in the state could be improved through investment in infrastructure, such as BART to Livermore. He would not change environmental laws, rather he would put the focus on making bureaucracy more efficient. He points out that environmental laws have created jobs and enhanced the quality of life for people in the state.

My decline to state and independent moderate family will vote for Tim Sbranti and here's why! Tim is the people's choice and Baker is the extreme right and the corporate choice.
Baker has already benefitted from hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, by a right-wing corporate interest group funded by the extremist Munger family, who put out a 16 page glossy attack piece full of lies because Tim Sbranti is too moderate for them. If elected to to the state legislature Baker would work to pass laws that benefit them and rubber stamp their Tea Party and corporate issues.
Tim Sbranti in contrast, is a statewide leader in education, a classroom teacher and effective local leader. Under his fiscal leadership he transformed Dublin from a city suffering from serious budget deficits into a city with a budget surplus, without sacrificing major cuts to community services.

More Glazer and Arnerich Primary Supporters Move Support to Catharine Baker
(Pleasanton, CA) Local small business counsel and education activist Catharine Baker continues to pick up momentum for the General Election, including picking up bipartisan endorsements previously for her Primary Election opponents.
The new endorsements include Mayor Sue Severson of the Orinda City Council, Mayor Pro-Tem Bob Simmons of Walnut Creek City Council, Councilmember Mark Mitchell of the Lafayette City Council and Board of Education member Mark Jewett of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.
“Voters know they have an important choice to make this November between special interests and the best interests of our community and state,” commented Mayor Severson. “Voting for Catharine Baker is the best choice for our community, and I strongly support her.”
“I have known Catharine personally for several years and worked with her in the leadership of a local youth organization,” said Board of Education member Jewett. “Catharine will be a strong and effective advocate for our schools and our children.”
In addition to receiving key bipartisan endorsements, Catharine out-performed Tim Sbranti’s cash on hand (COH) in the most recent campaign filing, closing with $117K COH to Tim’s $39K.
Catharine is a mother of school-age twins and a parent leader in their school district, serving as Vice President of the Dougherty Elementary School Site Council and on several school improvement committees.
Catharine is also a volunteer leader in her community, previously serving on a local preschool board, and volunteers for Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts in the region as an archery instructor. She also volunteers on the board of the Diablo Regional Arts Association in Walnut Creek, supporting arts and educational programs for families and school children throughout her community.
Catharine earned her B.A. degree from the University of Chicago, overcoming cancer her senior year to graduate Phi Beta Kappa and with honors. Catharine later went on to earn her J.D. degree from U.C. Berkeley School of Law.
