SAN LEANDRO | MAYOR | Even before San Leandro Mayor Stephen Cassidy took office in 2010 he had alienated the city’s police officers, city employees, progressives, and members of the Alameda County Democratic Party, just to name a few important constituencies.
After moving into the mayor’s office—which he subsequently rarely inhabited—there was no other member of the council who pushed back at Cassidy’ bullying ways than Councilmember Diana Souza, one of three candidates to replace him this November.
Last Thursday night, following a candidates forum at the San Leandro Library, Souza said numerous references to her ability to forge relationships is not a slight aimed at Cassidy, who is not seeking re-election. Souza said she was planning to run for mayor even before Cassidy’s announcement. “Stephen is not in the race. I’m running, because I was going to run, regardless.”
However, she suggested her campaign may have dissuaded him from running for re-election.
Souza, who is termed out this fall after eight years on the City Council said she was surprised by Cassidy’s announcement last May. “I had no clue, but I’ll take credit for him dropping out,” Souza said with a chuckle.
But, when asked to clarify, she became serious and added, “Because in his comments, he knew it was going to be a vigorous campaign. If he would have been unopposed, would he have stayed? I don’t know?”

Both Cassidy and Souza try to bully people, Cutter tries to find compromise like a leader should. That's why my family will be voting for Pauline. Bullies always seem to have courage but that just leads to division. To be a leader you also have to have brains and a good heart. Souza is brainless and heartless, will say anything to get elected, but she has done nothing meaningful in her eight years on the city council. She is not a leader or an innovator and most of the city sees that. Souza would just be a disaster for San Leandro.

Diana Souza has absolutely zero leadership ability and no ethics at all. San Leandro needs someone better and that would be anyone else. She is not well thought of by leaders in San Leandro or other cities in the Bay Area. Would make a horrible Mayor and we would suffer because of her incompetence. Voting for Pauline Cutter, but even Dillman would be better than Souza and he just got out of prison.

Pauline Cutter is endorsed by Firefighters, Labor Unions plus the Chamber of Commerce, Teachers and the Sierra Club. It looks to me like she has a majority of both school boards and City Council. It also looks like she has dozens of supporters on the different San Leandro Commissions. These are the people who know San Leandro Council members best and they choose Pauline Cutter for Mayor. That's good enough to get my vote.
I have listened to and watched Council meetings and Souza is definitely the least intelligent Council person. She has taken the lead on, and done very little in her two terms. Souza would be a disaster for San Leandro!

I have listened to and watched Council meetings and Souza is definitely the least intelligent Council person. She has taken the lead on, and done very little in her two terms. Souza would be a disaster for San Leandro!

If the talents of Diane Souza are the real reason Cassady has decided to not run for re-election, then I think the US government should create a special position, and funded by federal tax money, for Souza in which her one and only job would be to try to get as many as possible of the present clowns and crooks in public office to leave.

The dumbest of all is Souza! Even Dillman is smarter and he just got out of jail. Cutter is a lot smarter than Souza. Cassidy and Souza are both bullies and like to boss people around. When we read the newspaper articles we were flabbergasted that San Leandro Council people would support the loss of San Leandro City revenue and San Leandro Jobs. Oakland gains and our city loses because of these 2 idiots. Another e-mail said both Benny Lee and Diana Souza support flying the Chinese flag at City Hall. That's outrageous. These two lost my families votes forever. I'll spread the word when I talk to friends.

My husband and I like Pauline Cutter. She does try and find solutions to problems that the majority of Council can agree with instead of being so dictatorial and rigid like Souza. Pauline also has a better personality and has the ability to get along with more people, that Mayors need to be successful. Souza is too sour and seems to lack tact, which would make her a poor Mayor. Can't vote for Dilman, although even he has a better personality than Souza.

Here's one of Marga and Mike Katz-Lacabe's disturbing opinions. For example, when the police conducted a sting on men that were having sex in the bathrooms at Marina park. Marga spoke during public comments at a City Council meeting stating that gay men needed places to have sex since there were no more “Tea rooms” available to them. Mike was there with her videotaping her every word. Disturbing! Our children need advocates that would see something wrong with adults having sex in a park bathroom that children use. It is about values and safety for our children and our City. Gay or straight- rent a hotel room.

Under our current leadership San Leandro is the talk of other cities as the city has accomplished so much and is going in the right direction. Souza with her sour contrarian personality and lack of acumen, would set San Leandro back many years. Cutter has most of my neighborhood's votes because she seems able to compromise, while Souza is too stubborn to be an effective Mayor.

I recall Cassidy said time with his family was the reason. Now Santos is saying “it was Cassidy's employer.” How the hell does Santos know? I don't understand the comment about me and WM. WM has been in SL for many years and to best of my knowledge has hired minorities; also all of their drives are with Local 70 and others with local 6, so WM does participate in collective bargaining and I support every thing labor. I helped work out details with WM and local 70 on the lock out; both sides cooperated with me, as Mayor, and the PD; all was peaceful. WM is vital to the economy of SL as it produces over $1.5 million a year in revenue. VM Lee should never have gone to the City of Oakland in support of Calif. Waste Solutions without understanding he was going to cost the City millions of dollars and in all deference to Diana, it is believe it was Cassidy's employer who suggested he not run. It's obvious the one poster in the above posts who keeps trying to defend the San Leandro traitors Benny Lee and Diana Souza doesn't understand the harm San Leandro will suffer and why. It's not just the expansion fee San Leandro lost which is over 1 million, but San Leandro gets over 500,000 thousand per year in transfer fees from Waste Management from the Oakland garbage that is brought to Davis Street. This goes into the general fund of the city that helps keep our police, fire, public works going. The contract was a 10 year contract. That comes to 6 MILLION dollars lost to San Leandro's general fund!
The fact is even though WM is based in Texas, the Transfer Station is based in San Leandro and the garbage that is brought into San Leandro by other cities generates millions of dollars for San Leandro and hundreds of jobs. Oakland garbage will now be brought to Richmond and San Leandro will lose millions in fees and permits and many jobs will be lost in San Leandro. Shame on the Vice Mayor. Resign Benny Lee and do the honorable thing. Move to Oakland where your friends are. Souza should go with you.
