Smeyesing–smiling with your eyes–is something
Tim Sbranti can’t seem to do during this campaign.
|
ASSEMBLY | 16TH DISTRICT | If you place 16th Assembly District candidate Tim Sbranti in the mayor’s seat during Dublin City Council meetings you will see a gregarious young politician running the hearing with the energy of a late night talk show host. If you know Sbranti is a big fan of high school football in the Tri-Valley and even provides energetic color commentary of games on local cable, it becomes doubly odd to see the dour, low-energy Sbranti that shows up for candidates forums over much of this year.
As far back as last February—during the primary—Sbranti seemed to disappear when appearing at the same table as his fellow Democratic opponents, primarily Steve Glazer. The lone Republican in the primary—Catharine Baker—never appeared with the group of Democrats until an endorsement meeting with the Bay Area News Group late in the campaign. Baker won the primary over Sbranti by eight points, but even with the field narrowed to two in this moderate Assembly district, Sbranti still doesn’t look like he feels comfortable. At least, that’s what his body language is showing.
At a forum in Walnut Creek last Wednesday the contrast was even more noticeable since Baker arrived at the event 25 minutes late. The forum began as scheduled and Sbranti was posed a series of questions while seated next to an empty chair. Sbranti capably answered the questions, but with some of the same lack of passion seen before. Granted, one of the main topics was high-speed rail.
Sbranti said he supports the transportation proposal. However, he added, “Without private investment the system cannot go.” He also backs BART’s planned expansion to Livermore, saying he wants to mimic the growth that followed BART to Dublin. In addition, both BART and high-speed rail running through the spine of the state will encourage retail and housing growth along the train’s path, said Sbranti.
Later, when Baker arrived at the dais and took questions from the moderator—some new to both and a few residual queries the challenger had already answered—Sbranti looked completely disengaged. He stared blankly with a mixture of depression, melancholy and mild annoyance for long periods of time as Baker spoke. Sbranti also made few attempts to connect with the small, intimate audience.
Baker said one of the main distinctions between the candidates is high-speed rail, which she does not support. In fact, much of Baker’s rhetoric is rock-ribbed Republican ideology that seems almost retro in an era when the national party is routinely hung up on divisive social issues. One three occasions Wednesday evening Baker portrayed Sacramento as dysfunctional, while defaulting to support for local control. “Stop micro-managing our small businesses,” Baker said of job creation in the state. “Stop the spending spree,” she said later while admonishing the state when it comes to fiscal discipline.
Sbranti’s tepid performances may be a byproduct of a difficult Assembly district for Democrats to retain. No other race in the Greater Bay Area has a better chance of being flipped by Republicans than this one representing parts of the Tri Valley and Contra Costa County. In the sixteenth, voter registration only slightly favors Democrats. In addition, the district as a whole is solidly moderate. For Republicans, it also doesn’t hurt to have a first-time candidate like Baker who not only has a firm grasp of conservative ideology, but the look of a politician and the ability to act like the Alpha dog in this race.
Furthermore, most candidates forums are purposely devoid of confrontation, but that didn’t stop Baker from alluding to her Democratic opponent without using his name. In her closing, she argued against supporting “reinforcements for the status quo” and more pointedly challenged Sbranti’s decision not to reveal answers he may have offered on union questionnaires. The issue is a vestigial tail from Glazer’s anti-union stance in the primary. Meanwhile, Sbranti sat through the attack like a long-time spouse merely trying to weather another night of mental abuse.
Nevertheless, the local Democratic Party’s are placing the effort to get Sbranti’s elected to the Assembly a top priority and he is the likely the front runner despite failing to master the art of smeyesing–smiling with your eyes–or, what voters might comprehend as a candidate acting like they want to be there.
Baker is not moderate. She has been bought and paid for by the corrupt corporate special interest Tea Party crooks like Charles Munger that continually stick it to consumers. They have spent millions of dollars on her campaign.
Tim Sbranti, on the other hand, is a teacher who is used to compromise and trying to find situations that help all. That's why he is endorsed by Nurses, Police, Fire, the Democratic Party, Consumer groups, Environmental groups, Seniors, Women groups, our current Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, our current Congressman Eric Swalwell, and now Jerry Brown our Governor. Tim is the moderate not your candidate, and that's why Tim has all the moderate support.

Don't forget Fire, Police and Nurses also support Tim Sbranti over Baker. Safety is very important to us conservatives and why I will vote for Tim. The Tea Party extremes and Baker lost this Republican voter forever. I switched registration after the Primary. Get out of our Assembly race Charles Munger and take your ultra conservatives with you.

So tired of the union-whore Branti propaganda. Moderate voters are much smarter than you sluts.
I have now been convinced that the Branti campaign is corrupt and rotten to the core as evidenced by the disparaging vitriol spewed by his allies. This along with the vilification of the volunteer who dared to tell the truth about how she was told to write scurrilous statements about Branti and then blame Baker, has convinced me to vote for the only moderate in this election. It is times like this that I am ashamed to be a Democrat.
As far as we are concerned there is NO Democrat in this election, only a lying, crooked union boss and moderate Catharine Baker.

My husband and I really want to thank Blanca Nunes, the young woman who had been volunteering for the Sbranti campaign and went public about how that campaign had been sabotaging itself on the Internet and then blaming the Baker people. This was simply outrageous.
As independents, we have already cast our ballots for Ms. Baker and encourage others to do so, too. Too many slick and deceitful politicians already in Sacramento.
Thank you again, Blanca, for telling the truth.

People should not vote for Tim Sbranti because he is comfortable with corruption, scapegoating, and is part of a countywide cover up. City of Dublin is responsible for what is left of ACAP, the anti-poverty agency that was quickly closed by its board of derelict politicians to cover up the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars by the Alameda County government. Someone I know did a public records request to get more information about what happened to the missing money. Sbranti's office told him that the records had been destroyed. After catching them in that deception, Sbranti's office sent him fraudulent documentation. Tim Sbranti: What happened to the $300,000 stolen from ACAP? This needs to be investigated and certainly Sbranti's role in the cover up needs to be investigated. The court records should provide some clarity. No to Sbranti.

If Branti ever got in, he would sell this district down the drain and further bankrupt California.

The only MODERATE in this race:
SF Chronicle' supports ASSEMBLYWOMAN CATHARINE BAKER 2014 campaign.
After a costly and caustic four-way primary that devolved into “proxy wars” among various well-heeled interests, the November runoff has settled into “a more traditional race” between two major party candidates, suggested Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti, the Democratic candidate.
He’s only half right.
Sbranti, a veteran classroom teacher, is very much a traditional Democrat — especially when it comes to toeing the party line in resistance to education reforms that intrude on the unions’ comfort zone. His engaging style and extensive contacts from a decade in elected office should make him an easy choice for the deep-blue partisans in the district that reaches from east of the Berkeley hills to the Tri-Valley.
But this district, with its affluent suburbs, array of high-performing schools and distinct independent streak, is ripe for a Republican seeking common ground with the 20-plus percent of registered voters who do not claim a party preference.
Republican Catharine Baker, a Pleasanton attorney, fits that bill.
“I have an ability to not be dogmatic and party-line,” she said. As examples, she cited her support of recently passed Democratic legislation on groundwater management, plastic-bag bans and legislation that strengthens the ability to prohibit certain people with mental illnesses from possessing guns. She accepts AB32, the state’s landmark climate-change law, as a settled issue — she would focus on reducing its cost to consumers.
Both candidates express a commitment to improving California’s business climate. Their answers on proposals to curtail abuses of the California Environmental Quality Act — one of the major business complaints about state regulation — are virtually identical: The law is valuable, but needs to be more transparent.
Even Sbranti acknowledged that “at the end of the day,” the differences between the two are not profound on most issues.
However, the distinctions are worth noting. Baker would ban strikes by BART workers; Sbranti would not. Baker has refused to fill out any secret questionnaires by interest groups, which are often a condition of endorsements and contributions; Sbranti has played that game. Baker agrees with a Los Angeles judge’s recent ruling that found that California’s overly protective rules on teacher tenure and the primacy of seniority undermine the civil rights of low-income and minority students; Sbranti sees no need to disrupt the status quo on that point.
Baker’s centrist sensibilities would provide a good influence on the Republican caucus and a potential partner for Democrats looking for bipartisan solutions. She is our choice in the 16th Assembly District.

She'll follow a long line of Republicans such as Lynn Leach and Guy Houston, but thankfully is more a Democrat than the purported 'Democrat.'
