Joan Buchanan, a former Assembly member who termed out of office last month, was another Democrat vying for the club’s imprimatur for the coming special election in the State Senate 7th District to replace Mark DeSaulnier, who is now in Congress.
Buchanan, like Bonilla peppered her speech with vows to strengthen education in the state. But, on several occasions, it was clear that Buchanan felt Bonilla’s gaze emanating from her right. While addressing the center of the audience, Buchanan eyes, nonetheless, darted to the right on at least three times.
Was this a case of subtle political gamesmanship?
Bonilla said no. After the endorsement meeting in which Buchanan easily won the club’s backing, Bonilla said she had no intention of rattling Buchanan and merely wanted a better look at her opponent while she spoke.
“Joan doesn’t get unnerved,” said Michelle Henry, a member of Buchanan’s campaign team. “It’s just politics.”
Buchanan and Bonilla, at times, Monday night, echoed scenes of camaraderie typically seen among a bunch of Democratic legislators pushing a new bill at a press conference. Both have pledged to run a clean race with Buchanan going as far as describing her campaign slogan as “positively for us.”
Buchanan’s endorsement Monday night, however, was not surprising. She is a member of the Tri Valley Democratic Club and its president Ellis Goldberg had already publicly touted his support for her candidacy. Buchanan received the backing of 29 voting members, Bonilla won two and four voters called for no endorsement.
Voters in the 7th District, which spreads from Contra Costa to Alameda Counties, may not have the appetite so soon for another negative campaign like the one that elected Republican 16th District Assemblymember Catharine Baker over Tim Sbranti and before that, in the primary, that included Steve Glazer.
Meanwhile, time is of the essence in this very short campaign. In addition to Buchanan and Bonilla, attorney Mark Meuser, a Republican, is in the race. The deadline for candidates to file is this Friday, Jan. 23, with much speculation centering on whether Glazer will attempt a run.
Furthermore, vote-by-mail ballots will be sent beginning Feb. 16 and due Mar. 10, with the primary set for Mar. 17. The general election is slated for May 19.

Sadly, I do think Glazer will finish in the top 2. He will be in a run off with Susan Bonilla or Joan Buchanan. He might even be the top vote getter even though he has no principles and is a stooge for corporate business. He has taken more special interest money than any other candidate in independent expenditures. Look it up. The newspaper reports are one sided and only report what they want you to read. What a sleaze! He will never win the run off because both Bonilla and Buchanan can win a head to head race with the double talker.

State Senate candidate Steve Glazer called on his opponents to provide full transparency of their campaign promises by releasing their answers to special interest questionnaires on their webpage.
“Together we can take a positive step to end the hidden agendas and backroom deals that prevent our elected officials from addressing California’s problems in a fair and open manner. I ask you to join me in sharing with voters all of our responses to candidate questionnaires,” said Glazer.
“By publishing our responses on our websites, we will make our race a model of independence from the very special interests that use these questionnaires to pressure candidates into adopting rigid and narrowly drawn positions,” Glazer said in his letter.
The letter was e-mailed to the three other Senate District 7 candidates: Joan Buchanan, Susan Bonilla and Terry Kremin. The fourth candidate Michaela Hertle has withdrawn from the race and endorsed Glazer. Hertle’s name will still appear on the ballot. So far, none of Glazer’s opponents have opted to publish their answers to questionnaires.
“The focus of our campaigns should be on solutions to the big problems facing our state,” said Glazer. “The voters deserve a thoughtful and fair-minded representative in Sacramento, and they should not be left wondering what sort of promises any of us made to secure that position.”
Glazer currently serves as the Mayor of Orinda and a Trustee of the California State University 23-campus system. During his tenure on the Orinda City Council, Glazer has helped balance budgets while making improvements to schools, libraries and roads.
State Senate District 7 includes the communities of Alamo, Antioch, Bay Point, Bethel Island, Blackhawk, Brentwood, Byron, Clayton, Concord, Danville, Diablo, Discovery Bay, Dublin, Lafayette, Livermore, Moraga, Oakley, Orinda, Pacheco, Pittsburg, Pleasanton, San Ramon, Sunol and Walnut Creek.
The primary will be held Tuesday, March 17.
In his Assembly race last year, Glazer declined to fill out any special interest questionnaire. However, he posted detailed positons on issues on his website. Glazer’s positions are now posted on his Senate campaign website atwww.glazerforsenate.com/issues.

Newspaper endorsements usually don't win races in this area as Glazer found out in his less than stellar race for the Assembly. Joan Buchanan and Susan Bonilla were one and two in the last poll I saw with a reputable pollster.
It takes volunteers, hundreds of them, to win an Assembly or Senate race. Susan Bonilla and Joan Buchanan have them, Glazer does not. I've been walking and I can tell you the polls are right. You better start walking Glazer fanatic because your man has no chance right now. Swearing and calling other people sexist names won't help either as most voters are women now.
Also, Susan Bonilla has been endorsed by moderate Mark DeSaulnier and conservative Ellen Taucher. Joan Buchanan would be their second choice. These are the endorsements that matter in this District.

East Bay, CA—Candidate for State Senate Steve Glazer announced today that his campaign has raised $179,000 in twenty eight days from 230 donors.
Glazer has raised a total of $213,000 to date for his Senate bid.
“It means a great deal to me to have the support of so many donors,” said Glazer. “Raising this much money in twenty eight days makes it clear that I have broad support for my District 7 Senate race.”
Glazer has received bi-partisan endorsements from almost fifty local elected officials including retired Contra Costa County Sheriff Dick Rainey, former San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed, retired State Controller Steve Westly, former state Treasurer Kathleen Brown and the Contra Costa Times.

Since he took over $224,000 spent just this month from Bill Bloomfield, a former Republican multi-millionaire businessman from Southern California who is trying to buy the election for him, Glazer is not clean, but he is an upper class corporate shill who cares little about the average voter.

Our state legislators usually lack political courage, unwilling to buck special interests that effectively control their parties. But the special election to fill a vacant East Bay state Senate seat features two candidates who display impressive independence.
Of the five names will appear on the ballot, the only Republican has dropped out of the race. Of the four Democrats, Terry Kremin offers no compelling reason for his candidacy, and Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla of Concord simply toes the labor line.
That leaves former Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, of Alamo, and Steve Glazer, an Orinda city councilman and California State University trustee. We endorse Glazer, but we emphasize that both deserve recognition for unusually thoughtful and politically courageous positions.
The March 17 primary will be the first step to fill a state Senate seat vacated by Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, who replaced the now-retired Rep. George Miller in Congress. If no one receives a majority, the general election between the top two finishers will follow May 19.
The Senate seat includes the Tri-Valley and most of Central and East Contra Costa. While Democrats comprise 44 percent of registration, half the voters are Republicans or independent. Consequently, this district provides an excellent venue for an open primary that rewards candidates able to bridge political lines.
Glazer has positioned himself as the centrist candidate. He was Gov. Jerry Brown's political adviser until 2012 but has since tried to distance himself. He opposes Brown's plans for high-speed rail and Delta water tunnels, supports teacher tenure reform, and opposes extension of the governor's temporary sales and income taxes that will phase out starting in 2017.
Glazer angered labor leaders by calling for prohibiting BART strikes, working to elect business-backed Democratic candidates and crossing party lines last year to back Republican Catharine Baker, who replaced Buchanan in the Assembly.
Buchanan, forced from the Assembly by term limits, previously served for 18 years on the San Ramon Valley school board. She enjoys support of the California Teachers Association but fell out of favor with local public employee unions for her 2012 bill that curbed pension spiking in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
The bill closed a gaping loophole in Brown's “pension reform” package and stopped some of the most egregious abuses in California. Her actions represented a principled stand in the face of great political risk.
This endorsement was not an easy choice. We often disagree with Buchanan, but she has continued to impress us with her intellect and independent thinking. We back Glazer because we agree with him on more issues, and he offers thoughtful centrist positions generally lacking in the Legislature.

Glazer was not the People's choice in 2014 and won't be the People's choice this year either. The People's choice will be either Susan Bonilla or Joan Buchanan who have both been elected before in much of this area.

Glazer was never the people's choice and was rejected by the voters before, coming in third, and is even less popular in the larger Senate District. Besides, he's not not going to be able to raise the money he needs for a Senate Race, and both Joan and Susan are very popular as shown by actually getting elected to the Assembly. Calling a woman a bitch is not going to win your candidate any votes since women make up about 55% of the voters in a special election. It looks like he will finish third according to the polls behind the two women. Buchanan is a huge favorite to be our next Senator and will be in the runoff with Bonilla.

I entered the race for SD7 because I hoped to inspire a new generation of Republicans to rise up and be heard. We all discuss politics every day at our dinner tables and with our friends. We lament about how policies coming out of Sacramento affect our personal lives, our communities and our businesses, but so few are willing to do anything about it. I wanted to prove that one person can make a difference.
With this said, under the current circumstances, the chance of my winning this race is slim, at best. This is my first effort at seeking elected office. It has become evident that I cannot establish the funding, name recognition and support required to win this election against this field of Democratic candidates within a six-week period.
I am endorsing Steve Glazer for California State Senate District 7. Mr. Glazer has proven that he can work with Republicans and Democrats alike to find common sense solutions to our state’s needs. Like me, he is a fiscal conservative. He supports pension reform and school reform. He is not beholden to labor or other special interests, as seen by his opposition to BART strikes. I urge my fellow Republicans to vote for Steve Glazer. We have more commonalities with him than differences and he can win this race.

According to the polls the choice of clean and honest Democrats, Independents, and progressive Republicans is Joan Buchanan.

Jumping in at the last minute means he won't have the funds necessary to run a Senate campaign so soon after his failure in the Assembly race. You can't effectively raise the money in two months before the special election. Contributers already know you are a loser and your swearing at the heavy favorite to win shows his supporters know that too. It should be Buchanan or Bonilla vs. the Republican in the run off.

So ecstatic that State Senator Steve Glazer is running. We had no one of any substance in this race until he got in. He'll win in a landslide. Bitchcanan and the other gal will cancel each other out and leave Steve the choice of Democrats, progressive Republicans and Independents. This is a much better fit for him than the Assembly.
