Kaplan, Brooks upset over ICE accountability item being iced by Oakland committee members

Oakland Councilmembers Rebecca Kaplan and Desley Brooks expressed bewilderment Friday after an inquiry into the Aug. 16 raid in Oakland conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents was abruptly removed from consideration at yesterday’s Oakland City Council Rules Committee. The item was previously scheduled for next Tuesday.

The request was made by Rules Committee members Abel Guillen and Anne Campbell Washington. The city is currently investigating Oakland Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick‘s involvement in the ICE raid on a West Oakland home that resulted in the arrest of an undocumented individual. The impetus for pulling the item is concern it could conflict with the investigation.

Kaplan and Brooks, in a statement Friday, said city staff had already completed its report on the matter and neither the city attorney’s office or OPD had requested the item pulled the council calendar.

They, instead, speculated it was the work of the mayor’s office. “Some are voicing their concerns that the item may have been pulled as an ask from the Mayor’s Administration as an attempt to not agitate the current internal investigation of the Chief of Police,” said the joint statement.

“I think it’s inappropriate to try to hide this report and vital that we clearly protect our community from ICE.” said Kaplan.

Included in the request for information is a chronology of the Aug. 16 raid; the date the memorandum of understanding between OPD and ICE was terminated, and the police department’s specific involvement, among other questions.

“There has been a significant amount of concern with respect to the raid that took place,” said Brooks. “The events surrounding the ICE operation were especially troubling because the City Council has set a sanctuary policy that bars any city employee, including police, from assisting federal immigration agents when they are enforcing civil immigration laws.”

  1. Bitches need to get on the bandwagon. Must do what is right: We must ALL support to mass deport illegals!

  2. MW, I was not suggesting a debate, only that a reliance on facts gleaned from reality and not a reliance on Wikipedia are of greater value. The Old White Money that is the heart of Oakland is the source of who purchased the votes that are the crux of Steve's article. Kaplan and Brooks have not yet been able to get enough money to offset the Old White Money that has been the heart of Oakland since daze of Dellums. Any long term resident of Oakland knows who owns who and it is not the so called Progressives. The mayor was elected because Quan was inept and corrupt in her own entitled manner. Things will not change in Oakland until the majority stands up, tosses the old and makes eliminates all election campaign contributions. All elections should be paid for by public money and no campaigning allowed. Until that time the politicians and their appointees will continue to be bought and paid for by the folks that bought the politician. MM

    Concerning the post of 4:06PM.

While I do not have time right now to go into a lengthy debate and discussion of all of the various points raised in it, however as far as the accusation of my dating myself, according to Wikipedia, Boss Tweed died in 1878, and back in 1878 I was only seventy-five years old, so, and as you can see, I am only a young upstart.

  4. MW, while I agree with you and your points, using Tweed, Daley and Pendergast dates you and tends to ignore the reality of the absolute corruption of our Oakland public representatives. To succeed every one of our politicians has to sell out in order to be elected. Understanding that all that is needed is to control the majority is the essence of Trump's victory. The 16-35% of the electorate that thinks that government should actually do something is why California got screwed in the election, all 40+ million of us. Here in Oakland, money only has to control the winners. The winners are well reported by Steve. It will only change when the people actually stand up and put out the votes and the money to buy their own majority. It will happen. MM

While according to conventional wisdom some of the major cities on the East coast and in the Midwest, and for instance NY, Chicago, and Kansas City, and to name just a few examples, have at one time or another been controlled by organized crime and/or run by a political boss, and such as for example Boss Tweed in NY, Richard J. Daley in Chicago, and Tom Pendergast in KC, however we all “know” that in California, and especially the extremely “enlightened” Bay area, such a thing could never happen, since all of our public officials here are so totally dedicated to democracy, openness, and full public disclosure, and therefore would never be co-conspirators to coverups and/or an illegal backroom fix.
