Buffy Wicks, the former acolyte of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, won her first stab at electoral politics Tuesday night by winning the June primary in the 15th Assembly District.

Wicks, who burst onto the local scene last year with over a half-million in fundraising, won the primary with more than 31 percent of the vote.

Which candidate Wicks will face in the likely contentious and expensive November General Election matchup is not yet known, as of early Wednesday morning.

That’s because Oakland Councilmember Dan Kalb’s early second place result has steadily dwindled throughout the night to the streaking Richmond Councilmember Jovanka Beckles.

With 74 percent of precincts reporting districtwide, Kalb total of 7,022 votes (14.2 percent) tops Beckles’ 6,890 (14 percent), by just 120 votes.

Berkeley school member Judy Appel is fourth with 11 percent, followed by a surprisingly dismal result for El Cerrito Councilmember Rochelle Pardue-Okimoto.

Despite significant backing by the California Nurses Association, Pardue-Okimoto appears likely to finish fifth with just 9.1 percent.
