A recall effort against Alameda Councilmember Malia Vella began in earnest Tuesday night. Proponents of unseating her delivered a notice of intent that could lead to a signature-gathering effort this summer to place the question on the November ballot. Grounds for the recall focus on Vella’s handling of the controversy involving City Manager Jill Keimach, who was terminated last month after secretly recording Vella and another councilmember, Jim Oddie. An independent investigative report, though, cleared Vella of interfering in Keimach’s decision to hire a fire chief, a claim that would have violated the city charter. Placing the recall question on the ballot this November requires 9,421 valid signatures within an allotted 120-day period.
