Berkeley school board member Judy Appel and her wife, Alison Bernstein, are improving after being struck by a car near their home early last Saturday morning, Berkeleyside reported Tuesday night.

Appel, who ran for the 15th Assembly District last June, are in intensive care at Highland Hospital in Oakland and listed in critical condition after the accident.

Appeal and Bernstein, who is an attorney, were hit while crossing the street at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Stuart Street. The driver is an 81-year-old man, the site reported.

“Both Judy and Alison showed amazing signs of improvement today,” said a statement from the family, reported by Berkeleyside. “The family continues to be blown away by the compassion, skills and professionalism of the nursing and medical staff in the Highland ICU.”

Appel has served on the Berkeley school board since 2012. During her run for the assembly last year, which she finished fourth in a large field of candidates, was viewed as strong and focused on education reform and LGBT rights.
