Cook-Kallio, Sbranti to interview for vacant Chabot-Las Positas trustee seat

Cheryl Cook-Kallio and Tim Sbranti are both teachers who lost to same person in successive assembly races.

In late January, Chabot-Las Positas Community College Board of Trustee Carlo Vecchiarelli announced his retirement after five decades of serving the district. Vecchiarelli was first elected to the board in 2004.

The remaining six trustees will interview seven candidates Tuesday afternoon who are vying for an appointment to serve the remainder of Vecchiarelli’s term, which ends in November 2020. The Area 5 seats represents Dublin and Pleasanton on the Chabot-Las Positas Board of Trustees.

Two candidates are well-known not only in the Tri-Valley, but also in local and state politics. Former Pleasanton Councilmember Cheryl Cook-Kallio and former Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti are among the seven applicants for the seat.

Cook-Kallio is also a former mayoral candidate in Pleasnton, while Sbranti served as mayor of Dublin before moving on to work in Rep. Eric Swalwell’s congressional office.

Both have backgrounds in education. Cook-Kallio is a former Fremont teacher. Sbranti, also a teacher, is the athletic director at his alma mater, Dublin High School.

In addition, Cook-Kallio and Sbranti have another commonality–both were defeated by former Republican 16th District Assemblymember Catharine Baker. Cook-Kallio in 2014, Sbranti in 2012.

Dr. Yazhou (Joel) Liu, Christine Petro, Margaret Qin Zhao, Joanne Rossi Becker, and Mr. Robert Tucknott, will also be interview Tuesday afternoon during two sessions with the board.
