San Leandro short-term rental ordinance to ban non-hosted AirBNBs

A short-term rental ordinance returns to the council after a work session last December that favored limiting hosted short-term rentals, commonly known as AirBNB or VRBO rentals based on the popular websites, to 120 days a year and continuing a ban on non-hosted rentals.

EBC AGENDA slateStiff penalties for repeated violators of up to six months in jail and fines remain in the ordinance before the council Monday night. Short-term rental owners will also be required to have a business license and charge the city’s 14 percent hotel tax.

The need for some type of city regulation on short-term rentals emerged last year after a spate of large non-hosted rentals popped up around the residential areas of East San Leandro. The large homes were offered on AirBNB and triggered complaints from neighbors who said the weekend renters were loud, disruptive, and snapped up available street parking.

-ALCO FIRE CONTRACT- San Leandro, like several East Bay cities, does not have its own fire department. Instead, San Leandro lowers its costs by contracting out to the Alameda County Fire Department. But a budget presentation by the fire department Monday night takes added importance after some city leaders have questioned a proposed $2.6 million increase in fees requested by the fire department.

–TONY SANTOS DAY– The city will declare May 6, 2019 as “Anthony B. Santos Day” in San Leandro. The former mayor passed away on April 15 after serving 18 years on the City Council, and four as mayor from 2006-2010.
