Haggerty wants Pride flag to fly over Alameda County buildings

Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty wants to begin the process of amending the county’s flag display policy to include the rainbow LGBT Pride flag, but while that’s being done, raise the flag over county buildings this month to observe Pride month.

EBC AGENDA slate“Within a nation that was founded upon and is guided by a set of principles that includes that every person has been created equal, that every person has the right to their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, the County of Alameda shall develop a Flag Display Policy that embraces this notion of inclusion and equality,” Haggerty wrote in a memo to the Board of Supervisors last week.

The flag display discussion is scheduled for Tuesday morning’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

>>>Regular board meeting, Tuesday, June 4, 10:30 a.m.
>>Next meeting: June 18.

The item comes after a firestorm of criticism that followed the Dublin City Council’s decision on May 21 against flying the iconic LGBT banner over its city hall.

Dublin is expected to reconsider the decision Tuesday night. Haggerty represents Dublin on the Board of Supervisors.

  1. Sebastian Max I would love for you to tell me exactly how this is harming you other than showing how close minded you are. The flags being flow will not harm you in any other way than your stubborn pride. Just because you do not agree with something does not mean that it is wrong. How about you expand your horizons just a tad and try to see things in a different light? It couldn’t hurt to try. There has been change for thousands of years and not all of it has been negative. Saying that being a certain way is a abnormal just shows your character. Thankfully I was raised by my father to treat people the way I want to be treated. I would never condemn someone for what they believe in because we see things differently. Maybe you should try the same. Or not and continue to let change close your heart to a wonderful group of people

  2. This is disgusting. A flag to “represent” a tiny minority of people, and which celebrates abnormal behavior and lifestyles. So gross – we are truly living in a degenerate society when this is the kind of loony-toon proposal an elected official makes.

I am so sick and tired of being lectured by these sanctimonious idiots who don’t know the first thing about our founding principles. Created equal means possessing the natural rights of mankind, not that every pervert or deviant’s personal sexual choices are just as good/valid/desirable as normal/mainstream people’s behavior.

When it comes to government, public policy and official statements should not endorse fringe, abnormal, or extreme lifestyles or viewpoints…if any such endorsements or support are expressed, it should only reflect the vast majority of normal people and normal behavior.

We cannot build a stable or peaceful society by tolerating perverted, amoral, abnormal behaviors. and we especially should not tolerate it just because a few incompetents like Haggerty can’t properly understand the concept of natural rights.

  3. What a hypocrite! This right-wing reactionary, who is fiercely anti-abortion and ONLY re-registered as a Democrat because he put his finger to the wind, and smelled a change in the political air stream. I know. I had the misfortune of working for him.
