How long is the City of San Leandro going to wait until they recognize one of boxing’s rising stars in WBA Interim Super Flyweight champion Nonito Donaire? Already one of the world’s Top 10 best pound-for-pound fighters, Donaire (23-1, 15 KOs) who was born in the Philippines and grew up in San Leandro, easily defeated Manuel Vargas of Mexico with a third round knockout Saturday night at the Hilton in Las Vegas.
Donaire battled to lower his pre-fight weight to 115 pounds and was originally slated to fight Gerson Guerrero, but doctors located problems with his eyes last Thursday. Vargas was summoned on short notice, and fought like the “tomato can” most expected. Next up for Donaire? Many believe he will next battle Fernando Montiel (40-4) this May in Mexico. Montiel also fought well Saturday night taking just two minutes of the first round to knockout Ciso Morales.
