Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Toyota President Akio Toyoda, and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk at a press conference announcing a partnership between the two companies to build electric automobiles at the former Nummi auto plant in Fremont. Toyota plans to invest $50 million into the Palo Alto-based company. “Toyota is a company founded on innovation, quality, and commitment to sustainable mobility,” said Musk. “It is an honor and a powerful endorsement of our technology that Toyota would choose to invest in and partner with Tesla.” Production of the Tesla Model S electric sedan could begin next year. The Nummi plant can manufacture 400,000 cars annually, but Tesla says only one-fourth of that number will produced leaving the possibility the Nummi site could still be developed for housing and retail or the future home of the Oakland Athletics.
