Barbara Lee: When Paul Ryan says ‘Inner City’ he means ‘Black’

CONGRESS | 13TH DISTRICT | When Republicans drop carefully crafted phrases like “welfare queen”, “Dred Scott” and “Barack Hussein Obama, they are called dog whistles. While they may not signify much to some on the surface they conversely ring the ears of the intended political group, in this case, Republicans.

Welfare queen denotes minorities mooching off the public dime, Dred Scott is an odd, subtle dig at Roe vs. Wade and activist judges, while using the president’s middle name is an obvious attempt to question whether he is Muslim and not even American.

So when Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, a Republican, went on a popular conservative radio program Wednesday and uttered the phrase “inner city” in response to a question about the “fatherless problem” in poor neighborhoods, it may have been intended to titillate the angst of conservatives.

“We have got this tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular,” said Ryan, “of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning to value the culture of work, so there is a real culture problem here that has to be dealt with.”

The comments raised the ire of East Bay Rep. Barbara Lee.

She issued a statement Thursday saying she knows exactly Ryan was trying to say. “My colleague Congressman Ryan’s comments about “inner city” poverty are a thinly veiled racial attack and cannot be tolerated. Let’s be clear, when Mr. Ryan says “inner city,” when he says, “culture,” these are simply code words for what he really means: “black.”

Ryan’s assertion over the racial breakdown of poverty in America is also incorrect, Lee added. “Instead of demonizing “culture,” and blaming black men for their poverty, Mr. Ryan should step up and produce some legitimate proposals on how to tackle poverty and racial discrimination in America. His uninformed policy proposals continue to increase poverty, not solve it. My colleague is demonstrating a complete lack of knowledge and understanding of the issues in urban and black communities.”

Later, Ryan denied his remarks were tinged with racism. “This has nothing to do whatsoever with race,” he told a conservative Web site, “It never even occurred to me. This has nothing to do with race whatsoever.”

  1. Rep Lee and many of Rep Ryan's critics are misrepresenting his words and intentions. I don't think he meant that young men in the inner cities are “too lazy” to work. He probably meant that with a lack of decent employment opportunities in the inner cities, one finds it is much easier to collect government benefits. The best way out of poverty is the financial independence provided by a well paying job. In my experience growing up in the east bay, I have met many men and women of various ethnic backgrounds that desire decent paying jobs that only require a high school diploma or GED. While our area has seen job growth at the high end in the technical sector, it seems the only well paying jobs for those without college educations (and for some that do have degrees) are few and far between. We need to do better, and I doubt more of Rep Lee's unrealistic proposals will do much. Her “5 in 10 act” is not a real solution, a meeting of Washington bureaucrats getting together to talk poverty without any real solutions. Low income Americans need cheaper energy now from real sources. New safer technologies in petroleum and natural gas extraction, and nuclear energy can lead an energy revolution that will take us off foreign oil. A streamlined tax code without the loopholes and giveaways to politically connected industries will incentivize more investment and less tax-dodging. And finally repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a market based solution to lower healthcare costs, will give our small businesses greater incentive to hire more and more potential entrepreneurs can start the business they always dreamed of. A growing economy is the best way to give our citizens in the inner cities the chance they want to experience the middle class life I was lucky to grow up in. I remember that growing economy, it was when a Democrat President worked with a Republican congress to create real solutions. And not accusing opponents of using dog whistles.

To get some perspective on how seriously to take Barbara Lee, Barbara Lee is a member of the Democratic Party, and which really should change its name to the DEMAGOGUES, CHARLATANS, ROBOTS, LEMMINGS, STOOGES, DRONES, PUPPETS ON A STRING, FEIGNED OUTRAGE, TRUMPED UP INDIGNATION, & BIG WINDBAGS MAFIA.

Furthermore, she is not merely a member of that MAFIA, but she is also a member of its very sleaziest and craziest branch, in other words the San Francisco area branch of that MAFIA. Let's not ever forget that when Jim Jones, and later of Jonestown infamy, was still in the Bay area that most of the Bay area's most prominent liberals and members of the Democratic Party, and including Willie Brown, George Moscone, the San Francisco Chronicle, etc, etc, etc, and just good little stooges and puppets on a string, continued to strongly back Jim Jones no matter what he did, and furthermore even gave him testimonial dinners at which they praised him to the skies and “informed” and “educated” the rest of us to the “facts” that Jim Jones was one of the greatest and most trustworthy people of all time.

Rather than apologizing and getting down and groveling in front of jokers such as Barbara Lee, Paul Ryan should tell them to go jump in the lake.

  3. It's just Barbara Lee playing a few dog whistles of her own to get her base on board.

Prominent members of the Democratic Party, and such as for instance Barbara Lee, pretend to care about the well being and betterment of the poor, those in the inner city, minorities, some neighborhoods having inferior schools, the poorly educated, and some groups having lack of opportunity, etc.

However the truth and the real facts are that if those problems were ever solved, then that sleazy MAFIA of demagogues, charlatans, and snake oil salesmen that calls itself the Democratic Party would never be able to win elections.

More specifically, the majorities that the DP is able to get in certain elections are primarily composed of votes from the uneducated, the stupid, the gullible, the illiterate, high school dropouts, those on welfare, and those whose schools and neighborhoods have been destroyed by the insane policies of liberals and the DP.

If we only allowed people to vote who weren't on welfare and could also pass a reasonably tough high school exit exam, it would be the end of the DP and also such demagogues and charlatans as Barbara Lee, Dianne Feinstein, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and a lot of other parasites who pretend to be interested in improving society but who in reality want it to remain as screwed up as possible.
