OAKLAND | Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf joined Rep. Barbara Lee as signers Tuesday to the Progressive Agenda to Combat Income Inequality.
The platform unveiled at a press conference in Washington, D.C. attended by Schaaf, Lee and other progressive leaders, such as New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio and Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, calls for tax fairness, national sick leave, family leave and raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
Last year, voters in Oakland easily passed a citywide measure, supported by Schaaf, raising its minimum wage to $12.25 an hour starting in March.
The 13-point new progressive agenda also seeks to enact the so-called “Buffet Rule,” expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, allow students to refinance their college debt and comprehensive immigration reform.
DeBlasio’s lead in Tuesday’s press conference is notable when it comes to Oakland. The push to raise the minimum wage in Oakland was initially led by mayoral candidate Dan Siegel, who credited DeBlasio’s progressive victory in New York City as inspiration for his own campaign.
Siegel’s $15 an hour initiative was later lowered to $12.25 and implemented just months after the November election.
