ALAMEDA CITY COUNCIL
While embattled Alameda City Manager Jill Keimach was dealing with the fallout of a potential illegal wiretapping charge earlier this month, she dropped a bombshell allegation against the island’s city attorney.

Keimach alleged she consulted with Alameda City Attorney Janet Kern before secretly recording Councilmembers Jim Oddie and Malia Vella sometime prior to their Aug. 16 meeting. Keimach also said once the recording was completed, she again alerted Kern. The city attorney has strongly denied Keimach’s charge.

The Alameda City Council is apparently standing with Kern. On Tuesday, the council is set to give Kern a two-year contract extension on her current contract starting next year through January 2021, with a $237,000 annual salary. The contract was previously approved in closed session earlier this month.

Kern was named Alameda city attorney in January 2012, earning a three-year contract worth $190,000 annually. Prior to that, she served as deputy executive director for the City of San Jose Redevelopment Agency and city attorney for Morgan Hill.
