Oakland Councilmember Dan Kalb’s slim lead over Richmond Councilmember Jovanka Beckles for the second spot in the 15th Assembly District’s fall election increased to 304 votes.
The Alameda County and Contra Costa County Registrar’s offices updated their Election Night results Thursday evening. Either Kalb or Beckles will face fellow Democrat Buffy Wicks, the winner of Tuesday’s primary, in November.
Kalb entered the day holding on to a 120-vote lead for second place. Mostly on the strength of a continuing strong performance in Alameda County, Kalb’s total increased to 9,336 votes (15.1 percent). Thursday’s update raised Beckles total to 9,032 votes (14.6 percent). Buffy Wicks garnered 19,381 votes (31.4 percent).

Tens of thousands of uncounted votes still remain in both counties. Thursday’s update added roughly 15,000 votes to the ledger in Alameda County. In addition, voter turnout increased to 21.62 percent.
The other too close to call race in the East Bay, Alameda County’s Measure A, the half-cent sales tax increase for childcare and early education, gained little movement. The measure, which needs a two-thirds majority for passage, remained short of the mark Thursday. Measure A has 64.51 percent of the vote.
As of Friday evening, Jovanka Beckles leads Dan Kalb by 284 votes. Voting continues, of course, and it’s very close. Kalb is very strong in Alameda, weak in Contra Costa County. Beckles is more evenly balanced.
