Alameda city attorney is retiring

Alameda City Attorney Janet Kern says she is retiring, effective Dec. 1. Kern has served the last seven years as city attorney following stints in San Jose and Morgan Hill.

“It’s been an honor to serve the residents of Alameda,” she told the East Bay Citizen. “But, the time has come for me to pursue other interests. I will be moving to Arizona to enjoy family, friends and the great outdoors.”

Kern has practiced law since 1984 before turning her attention to municipal law, starting in 1998.

Her departure later this year now gives the next Alameda City Council two important hires to make early next year. Alameda is set to begin a search for a new city manager after parting ways with Jill Keimach last spring.
