OAKLAND — City Council committee meetings, Tuesday, Sept. 25, start at 9 a.m.
Next council meeting: Oct. 2.
–OPD EYES IN THE SKY– A Oakland ordinance prohibiting the city’s unauthorized use of surveillance equipment has an exemption for “Large-scale events.” The Golden State Warriors victory parade last June fit this definition, according to a staff report, and drones were deployed by OPD. “Five fixed pan, tilt, zoom video cameras with live feeds were used. An additional video camera with recording capabilities was also used. None of the devices had night vision or facial or gait recognition capabilities.”
–“The cameras were provided by the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC). The cameras were set up on Monday, June 11 (the day before the event) and taken down on Thursday, June 14 (two days after the event). The cameras were turned off immediately following the Warriors Celebration. Because there were no incidents, NCRIC purged the collected data when the cameras were taken down.” The reports also notes that only vendors operated the equipment, not Oakland police personnel. –-DEPT OF VIOLENCE PROTECTION-– The new city department still does not have a permanent leader. “As stated at the Sept. 11 Life Enrichment Committee meeting, the City Administrator’s Office has engaged an executive search firm, The Hawkins Company, to conduct the search for the hiring of a permanent Chief of Violence Prevention.” LIFE ENRICHMENT AGENDA HERE.
