East Bay Rep. Barbara Lee lost out last week at a chance to become the chair of the House Democratic Party Caucus.
Likely incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made amends for the result by creating a spot for Lee as a third co-chair of the party’s congressional Steering and Policy Committee.
East Bay Rep. Eric Swalwell and Connecticut Rep. Rose Delauro, current co-chairs, will be expanded to include Lee, who was defeated in the caucus chair race by New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
Following the vote last week, Lee suggested sexism and ageism had denied her a chance at becoming the first African American woman to hold a position within the Democratic Party’s congressional leadership team.
Lee was previously vice-chair of the Steering and Policy Committee.
