San Leandro is about to take a higher profile in the East Bay’s issues with traffic and transportation.

San Leandro beatThe Alameda County Transportation Commission named San Leandro Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter as it next chairperson on Thursday.

Cutter served as vice chair of the regional transportation commission last year. Alameda County Supervisor Richard Valle previously served as chair.

Over the course of this year, Cutter said she plans to highlight several priorities. They include promoting interconnections of transit options in the region, a student transit pass program, closing gaps in the Bay Trail, along with increasing bike and walk mobility.

Cutter also plans to focus on improving rail safety. It’s an issue that has greatly affected San Leandro in recent years. Several deaths have occurred at the railroad tracks that criss-cross the city.

The Alameda CTC also selected Emeryville Councilmember John Bauters on Thursday as its vice chair.
