A lay person employed by a Catholic church in San Leandro is suspected of misappropriating an undisclosed amount of funds from the church, the Diocese of Oakland said on Wednesday.
A forensic investigation of the Church of the Assumption’s finances was conducted last October and confirmed the alleged financial improprieties, the Diocese said.
The Diocese of Oakland subsequently made a request to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office to investigate the matter, which is ongoing, the Diocese said.
Few specifics are known about the incident, but the Diocese said the allegation is limited to single former employee who is no longer employed by the Church of the Assumption.
“This matter represents a serious violation of the trust, generosity and stewardship of our faith community,” said Fr. Leonard Marrujo, parochial administrator of Assumption Parish. “I understand we will need to improve our adherence to strict standards of financial controls and work very hard to regain the trust of our parishioners.”
