Alameda County Board of Supervisors President Alice Lai-Bitker will not seek re-election in 2010.
A short list of names has already emerged including current Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson, former Assemblywoman and Supervisor Wilma Chan, former San Leandro Mayor Shelia Young along with Lai-Bitker’s Chief of Staff Shawn Wilson.
Lai-Bitker, who represents Alameda, San Leandro and parts of Oakland, said it is time for new blood on the board.
“I am honored to have served the County and District 3 for the last nine years,” Lai-Bitker said. “By the time I complete my term, it will be a decade of service.” “I have been part of a great many things that have happened in the County. It’s been a real privilege, but it’s time to move on and allow someone else the opportunity to serve. I look forward to working with my successor to fully implement the many programs that I have started over the years.”
Lai-Bitker previously worked under Chan before being appointed to replace her on the board of supervisors in 2000. She won re-election in 2002 and 2006.
