As East Bay Rep. Barbara Lee expected, House Speaker Paul Ryan removed her proposed repeal of the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force amendment Tuesday night from a defense appropriation bill.

Lee famously cast the lone vote in opposition to the resolution just days after the attacks of 9/11.

“This move is a slap in the face to the democratic process. Instead of listening to his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Paul Ryan stripped by amendment without even bringing it to a vote,” Lee said in a statement Wednesday.

On June 29, the House Appropriations Committee voted to Lee’s own personal surprise to include her repeal in the defense budget bill. Lee has attempted to move along the repeal of the AUMF for the past 16 years. She argues the authorization gives presidents the power to wage “endless war.”

Last week, Lee met with Speaker Ryan to make her case to include the repeal in the proposed defense bill. However, she indicated the conversation did not go well and Ryan did not commit to keeping the amendment in the bill.
