Former 15th Assembly District candidate Jovanka Beckles roused the dreams of progressives during her campaign last fall, but it wasn’t nearly enough to defeat Buffy Wicks, her well-financed opponent.
Out of office, because Beckles did not run for re-election to her Richmond City Council seat, but the Democratic socialist may be looking for a rematch with Wicks in 2020.
Beckles opened an exploratory committee this week for the 15th Assembly District seat, according to records.
Coincidentally, Assemblymember Wicks posted a tweet Thursday laying out support for Senate Bill 126, which adds greater transparency for charter schools in the state. Wealthy backers of charter schools spent millions in support of Wicks’ campaign last year, an issue that was highlighted by Beckles, a strong supporter of public schools, during the General Election season.
