The lack of competitive state legislative races in the East Bay has not stopped some incumbents from fattening already plump campaign cash reserves.
Assemblymember Rob Bonta continues to sport the East Bay’s largest cash reserves. His campaign reported $2.4 million in cash on hand, according to finance reports released last week.
The only other East Bay state legislator to join the million-dollar campaign club is state Sen. Steve Glazer. His campaign reported $1.7 million in cash reserves, through Jan. 18.
Unlike Bonta, who is facing a rematch against an unfunded Republican in the 18th Assembly District, Glazer, also a Democrat, is facing an upstart challenge from his left.
Democrat Marisol Rubio reported $63,361 in cash remaining, a paltry number in comparison to Glazer, but a respectable haul for a first-time candidate who is challenging an incumbent within her own party.
Perhaps, Glazer is taking the challenge seriously. His campaign raised $44,073 during the short, first pre-election reporting period that covers fundraising activity from Jan. 1-18. The total haul is the largest of any East Bay candidate this year.
Below is fundraising charts for the seven state legislative races on the March primary ballot. ($$ In = Contributions received; $$ Out = Expenditures paid; COH = Cash on hand; Blank = No report filed yet with California Secretary of State’s office.)
