Alameda has one of the lowest reported rates of the coronavirus infections in Alameda County. Perhaps, Alamedans are especially cautious about the risks of contracting the virus, but the lack of testing on the island could have be a reason for the low numbers.
To better determine the rate of infection and its potential spread, a testing site in Alameda is likely to be opened at an unspecified location sometime this month, Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft said this week.
With the help of the city manager’s office, Ashcraft said, “We are working hard on getting a testing site here. I’m very hopeful that in the month of July that will happen.”

The number of documented coronavirus cases in Alameda is 118, as of Friday. For its size, the rate of infection is low as compared to other cities in the county, a rate of 147 cases for 100,000 residents. Alameda’s numbers, however, like many cities in the region, has seen a noticeable uptick in new cases recently.
Ashcraft urged residents at a City Council meeting this week to get tested if they are asymptomatic or have come into contact with someone who has the coronavirus. Several testing sites currently exist in Oakland, in addition, to a single location in San Leandro.
“We need to work on getting our numbers down together and it’s well within our grasp,” Ascraft added. “I think Alamedans are bright and responsive. We are not science-deniers. Just make sure you don’t leave your house without that mask,” she quipped.
