Andy Katz’s current term on the
EBMUD board ends in 2018.

Four years ago, East Bay Municipal Utilities District board member Andy Katz thought he was ready for a move to the state house. He eventually dropped out of the race in the 15th Assembly District later won by Tony Thurmond.

On Wednesday, Katz filed papers to again run in the 15th District, this time to replace him.

Katz joins a growing field that includes Oakland Councilmember Dan Kalb, Richmond Councilmember Jovanka Beckles, and Buffy Wicks, a former political consultant to the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

A number of other names in the Berkeley, Richmond and North Oakland district are also reportedly contemplating a run to succeed Thurmond. Earlier this year, Thurmond declared his candidacy for state superintendent of public instruction next year.

Katz has served on the EBMUD Board of Directors since 2006 and is primarily known as a strong advocate for public health and the environment.

In early 2013, Katz announced his candidacy for the same 15th District seat to replace the termed out Nancy Skinner. But Katz pulled out of the race before the nomination period deadline for the 2014 June Primary, citing a lack of key endorsements and fundraising. Thurmond eventually won the seat in November 2014.
